Case Study House

Family Home de Freudenberger Design Studio à Los Angeles, CA

Located in Los Angeles’ historic Mar Vista Tract—an enclave of postwar modernist homes designed by Gregory Ain—this mid-century residence was reimagined by designer Nina Freudenberger for a young family of four. The original home, a rare architectural time capsule previously owned by a 99-year-old photographer, was filled with eccentric charm but required thoughtful renovations to suit modern living.

Nina approached the redesign with a deep respect for the home’s historic roots, layering in warmth, originality, and eclecticism. Architecturally, the layout was reconfigured to improve flow and functionality: the primary bedroom was relocated to a quieter part of the house, a Jack and Jill bathroom was added between the children’s rooms, and a fourth bedroom was introduced as a flexible guest room or office.

At the heart of the home, an open-plan living room and kitchen foster connection and ease, while the primary suite offers a quiet retreat with treetop views. Throughout, Nina blended vintage and contemporary elements with subtle color, natural textures, and artful restraint—bringing new life to a beloved mid-century home while honoring its storied past.
