SOMA Space Opera

The journey started with a question: "Is this house too crazy?" A fortuitous find on Zillow Gone Wild, our adventurous clients saw the potential of this unapologetically theatrical party house on a storied stretch of San Francisco's Folsom Street. They just needed reassurance.

The house might have seemed too idiosyncratic for some, due to the original owner's fantastical Star Trek-inspired design. Preparing to start a family, our clients needed better functionality: proper bedrooms, workspaces, a kitchen for real cooking, and spaces that could evolve with daily life. But just as importantly, they didn’t want to dilute what made the home special. They wanted sci-fi, not as kitsch or novelty, but as imaginative atmosphere!

Our response was a careful calibration: an interior that honors the home’s experimental, unconventional vibe while translating it into a language of material richness, restraint, and design rigor. Where there could have been spectacle, there is now playful sophistication.

The guiding concept for this project, “The Voyager’s Vision,” reframes the home as a journey through space and time, drawing as much from ancient materials and human history as from imagined futures. It is science fiction filtered through a design lens: tactile, grounded, and cinematic.
