Early Herman Miller Coconut Chair Designed by George Nelson in 1956

Early Herman Miller Coconut lounge chair. Manufactured ca. in 1960. Upholstery in brown fabric, coated shell from bent steel, chromed plated steel base. Chair will need reupholstery ! The Coconut Lounge Chair’s three-point triangular shell, evoking the image of a slice of a coconut shell, gave it his name. It’s back is slightly higher than it’s arm rests giving it a great comfort. It was designed in by George Nelson in 1956. Nelson and his Studio would not only design numerous furniture pieces for Herman Miller. George Nelson also was prominent and very influential as the curated of Herman Miller inviting some of the most influential predecessors in the field. Herman Milller in those years was one of the most innovative companies in furniture design. Certainly the Coconut Lounge Chair is one of the icons of mid-century modern furniture.
