Artist Biography
Qiu Ting was born 1971 in Luhe, Guangdong province. In 1992, he enrolled in the traditional Chinese painting department of China Academy of Art to study landscape painting, and graduated with a master's degree in 2000. In 2004, he earned his doctorate in fine arts from Tsinghua University. He is presently vice-president in the traditional Chinese painting department of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China.

Artist Biography
Qiu Ting was born 1971 in Luhe, Guangdong province. Designers have an wide reach through out the world but have yet to reach the depths of the ocean. Artist Jeff Conroy has created this Gyotaku print of large ray entitled simply "Gucci Ray" to fill that void. To achieve this remarkable painting, the artist applies sumi ink to a sting ray he caught himself on Florida's Gulf Coast, then "prints" it onto Marbled Mulberry paper - a soft, handmade paper. He then embellishes the details with watercolor to give extraordinary dimension and interest to its overall aesthetic. The artwork is unframed. Please contact the gallery for framing options.

Gyotaku - A Japanese word translated from "gyo" meaning fish and "taku" meaning stone impression and is believed to get its inspiration from Chinese stone rubbings of calligraphy, which then gave rise to printing . This tradition dates back to the mid-1800s and was used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own. Prints were made using Sumi ink and Washi paper. Artist Statement: In this piece, I wanted to create an environment that on the surface looks lovely: the colors are pretty, and the shapes feel inviting. This piece should give the viewer a sense of peace or hope. But I was also looking to explore an unarticulated sense of fear. The children head to a horizon of nothing. There are no trees, buildings, or any recognizable object. In fact, they are heading to unknown. The unknown can be our greatest fear. The fear of not knowing what is ahead of us can be debilitating, this type of fear can pull you back, keep you where you are. This type of fear can say to you: “It’s a scary world out there, better just stay where you are”. Instead of listening to the fear, these children represent the hope that it takes to continue to move forward relentlessly and resiliently. Even if I want to be alone, I can't be alone and I'm always with someone. It refers to feelings of emptiness and anxiety arising from individual and individual relationships between individuals and groups.
The human shape of the black dot represents me, you, or us. The mask used to live and the numerous faces created to avoid being caught are in the "black dot." The emptiness that comes from relationships with others and the collapse of expectations.
