Margaret Putnam left an artistic legacy rare even in the art world. Revered for her innovative techniques and inimitable style prior to her death in 1989 , her renown continues today. She was a 20th century woman with a Renaissance soul who lavished her work with brilliant color, always breaking and making the rules to achieve the desired effect. An explorer, Putnam was basically self-taught; it could not be otherwise because no one had the vision that she had. She worked in oil, watercolor, wax resist, casein, and pastel, exploring new avenues, developing new techniques, combining mediums, and creating a unique style, instantly recognizable, unlike any other. Tian Wei was born in 1973 in Beijing, China. He presently lives and works in Beijng. He is a contemporary ink artist engaged by China National Academy of Painting. Since 2018, Tian has been an visiting professor of the Comprehensive painting language of Central Academy of Fine Arts .
In recent years, Tian devoted himself to the study of meditation of Zen. By “emptying his mind” of all extraneous thoughts during the process of painting, Tian nds the ideal mental state and becomes liberated from reality. He works in water-based media, By permeating with layer of ink stains and lines over and over, tian has developed his unique distinctive visual language and style. His experimental and expressive Chinese ink characterized by symmetricity, simplicity that expresse the rythme of the Nature and wisdom of Buddhism. Designers have an wide reach through out the world but have yet to reach the depths of the ocean. Artist Jeff Conroy has created this Gyotaku print of large ray entitled simply "Channel Quilted Black Caviar Ray" to fill that void. To achieve this remarkable painting, the artist applies sumi ink to a sting ray he caught himself on Florida's Gulf Coast, then "prints" it onto Marbled Mulberry paper - a soft, handmade paper. He then embellishes the details with watercolor to give extraordinary dimension and interest to its overall aesthetic. The artwork is unframed. Please contact the gallery for framing options.

Gyotaku - A Japanese word translated from "gyo" meaning fish and "taku" meaning stone impression and is believed to get its inspiration from Chinese stone rubbings of calligraphy, which then gave rise to printing . This tradition dates back to the mid-1800s and was used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own. Prints were made using Sumi ink and Washi paper.
