Concentric, Amagansett, NY, 2020
Located in Hudson, NY
ABOUT “There’s no color in my work,” says Shlafer, “I either burn it, bleach it, or leave it alone.” Shlafer’s sculptures are designed with rudimentary material such as pine, oak, and spruce salvaged as driftwood on the Eastern end of Long Island. The artist started this body of work during the pandemic after he stumbled upon the charming discoveries while traveling on foot by the coastline. Always a wayfarer at heart, he drew inspiration from his youth of traveling on a motorcycle through Southern Africa and seeing indigenous art made from ordinary earth objects within local villages. “Wishbone 1” a 5 Foot sculpture, charred white oak with a tinted aqua resin base that reflects an omen of resilience and hardiness in light of the hardships of the past pandemic year, In another “Tune” a bleached spruce fence post narrowed into a tuning fork shape with a slate base. It welcomes a ceremonial vibe. “At the end of the day, that’s the energy we all crave,” says Shlafer, “who doesn’t respond to that?” “Mushroom #3” a charred white oak sculpture that is versatile in design so it can act as an end table or a stool. It is masterfully crafted and brings to mind the redwood stools...

Located in brussel, BE
Mechelen dolls are rare wooden devotional figurines (mainly walnut was used), which were made by some members of the Guild of Saint Luke. The figures, all individual saints, were made from reference models using highly regulated carving and polychrome techniques. They had to meet several requirements. The shape of the rug had to meet certain criteria and the letter M (from Mechelen) had to be visible in the shape. These devotional or saint figurines...

Barca Pez (Fish Boat) - wood sculpture by Chilean artist Pilar Ovalle
By Pilar Ovalle
Located in Glen Ellen, CA
Chilean artist Pilar Ovalle's sculpture "Barca Pez," or "Fish Boat," is crafted with driftwood collected from lake shores in Chile combined with dimensional Alerce, a native Chilean wood. It can be suspended as shown or a custom bracket (not included) can be designed based on the site to make it into an exciting wall sculpture. In Ovalle’s imagination, boats embody animal forms, reinforcing the imaginative versus physical nature of the boat as a representation of travel. Ovalle says of her work, "As I work directly with Nature, combining wood already ‘worked’ by wind, water and time, with ‘elaborated’ - sawn - wood, I do this with a critical scope, dealing with ecology and progress, with emotion and poetry somehow set against rationality and technology, or setting ‘wisdom’ against mere information." This sculpture is suspended from two wires, but could also be wall hung with a custom bracket (not included). We would be happy to assist with the design of this custom bracket. Ovalle traveled to Southern Chile to study with boat builders and learn the traditional skills of the trade, which is evident in the graceful curve of the hulls she has built with traditional joinery and wood "stitches" and without the use of nails. Born in Santiago, Chile, Pilar Ovalle began her studies in 1989 at the Instituto de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago. She studied with the Instituto through the early '90s, during which time she also won Third Prize at the XV Concurso de Arte Joven (Young Art Contest) and received grants from Fondart (National Fund for the Arts) for her projects “Sculpture with Shattered Wood” and “Curved Wood Sculpture...

"RAKU RED AND WHITE", wheel formed white glaze, copper red, gold leaf, sculpture
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"RAKU RED AND WHITE", 2019, in wheel-formed white glaze with copper red blush, sprig, stamp, gold leaf and raku fired with kintsuji gold by artist Andrew Cornell Robinson, is one of a series of sculptural objects that include ceramic, glass and mixed media grottoes and containers. A project exploring the vessel form and notions of gratitude, plenty, poverty in material or humanity. Robinson has led artists to explore tableware as sculptural form – "Changing attitudes and emerging social behaviors in food preparation and the social and cultural rituals of eating have lead to changes in the way tableware is made and used." Andrew Cornell Robinson is an interdisciplinary artist working across media (ceramics, textiles, painting, prints, etc.). His work is influenced by collaborative craft communities, traditions, and the performative qualities of cultural production. The underlying ideas exploring identity, histories, rituals, and power in his work aim to create a space for intimate experiences and open narratives. He studied ceramic sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art and the Maryland Institute College of Art where he received a BFA. He was awarded an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, where he became interested in the intersection of memory, identity, politics, and power. He has been featured in many publications including Sculpture Magazine, Huffington Post, Hyperallergic, Art Info, et al. He has participated in curatorial and research projects and recently was a participating artist in Debtfair a project in the Whitney Biennial. Andrew has also worked on collaborations with designers such as Donna Karan’s Urban Zen project where his work in ceramics led to workshops with artisans in Haiti and the creation of a ceramic studio in Port-au-Prince. He is currently working with The Powerhouse Arts Workshop and their design team from the Pritzker-prize winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron in the design and development of a contemporary industrial fabrication center established to serve the working needs of artists in New York City. He is currently a member of the faculty at Parsons School of Design and Greenwich House Pottery in New York City. Organic Swirl Shaped Wooden Sculpture
Located in Houston, TX
Beautifully carved out of driftwood, this dynamic piece combines a natural wood exterior with a polished center spiral. Signed by the artist. Artist Biography: Ricardo Pascale was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1942. He started his training in visual arts at the age of 13. His instructor, Elsa Caraf led him in his first use of the techniques. He soon discovered oil and watercolor painting. From then onwards, his life would go along two, apparently diverse but intrinsically close, activity paths: visual arts and the academic world, which would continue to intertwine in his activities until the present. In 1966 he graduated at the University of the Republic in Uruguay, in Economics and Administration1. With the return of the country to democracy in 1985 he was appointed president of the Central Bank of Uruguay, developing another essential aspect of his vocation: public service. Under his chairmanship, and at the suggestion of Jorge Abbondanza, the Pedro Figari...
