1960s Couches For Sale on 1stDibs

There is a range of 1960s couches for sale on 1stDibs. Frequently made of wood, fabric and animal skin, all 1960s couches available were constructed with great care. We have 11444 antique and vintage 1960s couches in-stock, while there are 94 modern editions to choose from as well. 1960s couches have been made for many years, and versions that date back to the 18th Century alongside those produced as recently as the 21st Century. There are many kinds of 1960s couches to choose from, but at 1stDibs, mid-century modern, Scandinavian Modern and modern 1960s couches are of considerable interest. There have been many well-made 1960s couches over the years, but those made by Adrian Pearsall, Milo Baughman and Hans J. Wegner are often thought to be among the most beautiful.

How Much are 1960s Couches?

Prices for 1960s couches can differ depending upon size, time period and other attributes — at 1stDibs, 1960s couches begin at $10 and can go as high as $429,829, while the average can fetch as much as $3,935.

Finding the Right seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About 1960s Couches
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 16, 2019

A sectional couch is comprised of individual pieces that can be arranged in different positions.

  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

A couch table is a long, narrow table with storage space below that is placed behind a sofa and stands no higher than its back.

  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
A modular couch differs from traditional couches in that they comprise a series of various moveable sections called modules. They generally include a wide range of options such as moveable arm pieces or chaises longues. These couches offer great flexibility as you can set each module according to your needs. Find a collection of antique and vintage modular couches on 1stDibs today.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 26, 2021
The terms “cloud couch” or “cloud sofa” may refer to two specific designs — Restoration Hardware‘s Cloud Sofa is a plush white sofa with no hard edges and an oversized seat upholstered with goose-down stuffing. The other design known by this name is Adrian Pearsall’s low-profile Cloud sofa, one of the contributions to mid-century modern furniture design for which Pearsall is recognized today and among the initial concepts for Craft Associates, the now-legendary furniture company he founded. On 1stDibs, you will find a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary sofas from some of the world’s top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 26, 2021
A chaise is different from a couch or sofa. A comfortable common ground between sofas and daybeds, early iterations of chaise longues were discovered in Ancient Egypt and were later frequently used in both Greece and Rome. The chaise longue is based on a modern French design and is also known as a chaise lounge. This low reclining seat, known in English as a "long chair," has an elongated design with a low back that reaches about half the length of the furniture, allowing a sitter to put their feet up and relax. Shop a range of antique and modern chaise longues and sofas from top sellers and makers around the world.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
A camelback couch is a sofa that features a curvy back with an arch in the middle that resembles the back of a camel. Depending on the design, the hump can be very prominent or very subtle. You'll find a range of camelback couches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
An infinity couch is a sofa that consists of separate pieces that you can arrange in different ways. A modular sofa is another name for this type of seating solution. On 1stDibs, shop a range of modular sofas.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
There are many kinds of comfortable couches-- it's really a matter of preference. on 1stDibs, you can find a variety of Modern, Art Deco, Victorian, Regency, among many other styles of couches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 17, 2021
A vinyl couch is a couch made from a chemical called polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which gives it a matte finish. Vinyl couches are smooth to the touch and tend to resemble leather but have less luster than a leather sofa. These couches are quite durable, lasting for many years without cracking like leather. Shop vinyl couches on 1stDibs.

Yes, there were watches in the 1960s. The first recorded wristwatch dates back to 1868, when Patek Philippe, a watchmaker founded in Geneva in 1839 by Polish expats Antoni Patek and Franciszek Czapek, designed a timepiece for Countess Koscowicz of Hungary. Fashion in the 1960s progressed toward a more casual look for men and for women during the decade. For women, the skirt suits of the 1950s prevailed during the early ‘60s and eventually miniskirts came along. Late-1960s fashion included ponchos, peace signs, chain belts, puffed “bubble” sleeves, frayed bell-bottom jeans for men and women, tie-dyed shirts, work shirts, sandals, headbands and moccasins.

Vacuum the velvet regularly. If a spill occurs, blot it immediately with a dry cloth. If the stain dries, you can blot it with a cloth dipped in a soap-and-water solution. But test this, or any other cleaning solution, on a hidden spot first to make sure it doesn’t cause damage. Once the fabric is dry, use a soft, dry brush to restore the original direction and loft of the pile.

The difference between a davenport and a couch comes down to special features. A couch or sofa is an upholstered piece of furniture designed to seat two or more people, while a davenport is a large couch or sofa that can be used as a bed or one that folds out into a bed.

A couch is occasionally called a davenport when the furnishing in question is a large comfortable sofa that can double as a bed or can be converted into a bed. The name comes from a now-defunct New England furniture manufacturer, A.H. Davenport & Company, which was established in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the late 19th century. Davenport furnished the homes of the richest Americans during what we now call the Gilded Age.

In the 1880s, thanks largely to the Industrial Revolution, the American economy started booming, and when it did, it created a whole new supply of millionaires. Firms like the Duveen Brothers supplied these families with European decor, and manufacturers such as A.H. Davenport & Company furnished their mansions. The term davenport became a synonym for any sofa that looked like the one produced by the popular Massachusetts company.
