Finding the Right Seating for You
With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.
Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.
Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.
The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.
Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.
With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.
Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.
No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022A club chair is called a club chair because the accent chairs became popular in the interior décor of gentleman's clubs in France. The original name for the club chair is “fauteuil confortable," which translates to "comfortable chair." You'll find a collection of club chairs on 1stDibs.
- What is a club fender used for?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A club fender is a type of seating that goes around a fireplace. Normally, the furnishings feature two L-shaped benches mounted on metal or wood frames. They became popular for decorating private men's clubs in England during the 18th century. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of club fenders.
- What is a jigger golf club?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A jigger golf club can refer to one of two types of clubs. Most often, it describes a predecessor to the modern 4-iron. You may also see the term associated with a pitching club or lofting iron, an early version of today's pitching wedge. On 1stDibs, find a selection of antique and vintage golf clubs.
- What is a fireplace club fender?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022A fireplace fender prevents ash from entering the room and adds a decorative element to your fireplace. A fireplace club fender is a fireplace fender with a cushioned fabric panel that adds an extra seating area. Shop a selection of fireplace club fenders on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 31, 2023There is no difference between a club chair and an armchair; a club chair is a type of armchair. An armchair is any chair with arms, while a club chair is a wide, comfortable type of armchair that is typically clad in leather and features thick upholstery. All club chairs are armchairs, but not all armchairs are club chairs. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of club chairs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022No, hickory golf clubs are no longer made for play but are often sought after by collectors. Manufacturers favor metal materials for additional durability. Hickory clubs are still seen as collector items for golf aficionados and can be proudly displayed as decor. Browse a wide selection of vintage hickory golf clubs on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 3, 2023Some old hickory golf clubs may be worth something. However, the condition of the clubs will have a big impact on value. Most golf clubs that underwent regular use will show some level of wear and tear, which may negatively impact resale price. Also, complete sets of golf clubs tend to be worth more than individual pieces. If you have questions about a particular club or set, enlist the help of a certified appraiser who can evaluate the equipment and estimate its value. On 1stDibs, shop a range of golf clubs.

- 1stDibs ExpertApril 12, 2024No one can say for sure who made the first pair of pants. However, anthropologists and archaeologists have traced the origins of pants back to ancient China. The oldest pants to have been discovered so far date back to between the 13th and 10th centuries B.C. These early garments were found on mummies in tombs in the Tarim Basin of western China. Find a large selection of pants for men and women on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022For a casual look, pair your Versace dress shirt with a nice pair of jeans and your favorite pair of loafers or casual pumps. For a more dressy look, pair it with dress slacks or a fitted skirt and dress shoes or heels. Find authentic Versace pieces on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 25, 2024No one knows for sure what the first pair of jeans looked like, as historians are unsure who created the earliest example of jeans. However, we do have a rough idea of what the first Levi Strauss & Co. jeans produced during the 1830s looked like. They were blue denim trousers with straight, relaxed legs. The jeans featured five riveted pockets and a button fly. Instead of belt loops, the jeans had one single angled loop at the waist designed to hold a hammer or other tool. Shop a wide range of jeans from some of the world's top boutiques on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022What pairs well with the CH07 chair by Hans Wegner is largely a matter of personal preference. To keep the eye focused on its dramatic curves, some interior decorators pair it with simple boxy sofas and tables. Feel free to experiment and create your own furniture layouts using the CH07 or shell chair. Find a collection of Hans Wegner CH07 shell chairs on 1stDibs.

- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023To pair an oval engagement ring with a wedding band, first consider the shape. Both domed and flat bands can complement the shape of an oval-cut gemstone. You may also want to consider a contoured band that will hug the curves of the gem. Next, decide what type of metal will coordinate with the engagement ring. An easy choice is to have the two rings crafted out of the same metal, such as 18-karat yellow gold or platinum. Explore a large selection of wedding bands on 1stDibs.
