Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About Stools And Ottomans
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
Yes, an ottoman can be used as a footstool. The ottoman, originally an upholstered seat or small bench without a back or arms, was a family’s main seating furniture, a way to merge floor seating with cushions and mats. It wasn’t until they were brought to Europe from Turkey, during the 18th century, that it became popular to join ottomans with other pieces of furniture, such as at the base of a chair. On 1stDibs, find a collection of ottomans.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 26, 2021
Ottomans are used as footstools, but can also be used as a makeshift side table, perhaps to be used for resting cocktails. They usually have four short but wide legs providing stability and ease of mobility. Your average ottoman is almost always firmer than a pouf, and even if the plush pouf in your living room feels sturdy, it’s probably not the best surface for your early-evening glass of wine. Shop a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary cocktail ottomans from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

Ottomans can be used as seats, footstools or for storage.

  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
You can sit on an ottoman, though it may not be very comfortable for long periods of time because they don't have backings like sofas and chairs do. Ottomans are typically used as footrests, but there is no rule against sitting on them.
    Casa QuietaFebruary 26, 2021
Sure you can, however it does not have a backrest witch can make it not so comfortable for a larger period of time
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
The point of an ottoman is mainly to provide a place for you to rest your feet so that you can relax with your legs elevated. Large ottomans can also double as extra seats, and some have hidden storage for throws, pillows and other items. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of ottomans.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2019

The difference between an ottoman and a footstool is that an ottoman’s design and upholstery coordinates with an existing piece of furniture, and a footstool typically does not match a specific chair nor does it have to be upholstered.

  • Nazmiyal
    NazmiyalMarch 23, 2021
There is no difference - the term Ottoman and Turkish are interchangeable when talking about rugs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 21, 2019

The difference between a hassock and an ottoman is that a hassock does not have storage, and an ottoman does. Both pieces can be large or small and have legs.

  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 16, 2019

An ottoman is a form of a seat that has no arms or back and can be used as a footstool.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
The use of an ottoman in a bedroom is largely the same as it is in a living room. A person may place an ottoman in front of a lounge chair or accent chair used for reading in the bedroom, or they might position it at the foot of the bed or against the wall so that it can serve as a bench. An ottoman with a hinged top and a hidden inner compartment may serve as storage furniture for bedding, pillows, clothing, shoes or accessories. Shop a large selection of ottomans on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 30, 2023
No, chairs and ottomans don’t have to match. While you can often purchase matching ottomans for chairs, there is no rule about how to style furniture. Pieces with a similar shape, color or material can coordinate even if they aren’t a matched set. Find a range of chairs and ottomans on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, the Ottoman Empire had incredible works of art that have a distinctive flair and are well-regarded around the globe. The Ottoman Empire lasted from roughly about 1300 to 1923 and was a dominant culture for a time. From tapestries to mosaics, detailed jewelry to dramatic paintings, the Ottoman Empire was an era of fantastic works of art that were influenced by a vast variety of cultures. Shop a collection of Ottoman Empire art from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Typically, an ottoman is not a coffee table. An ottoman is a small cushioned seat without a back or arm rests. You can shop a collection of vintage and contemporary ottomans from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
If you do not have a coffee table, an ottoman tray is a great way to make an ottoman more functional and turn it into a coffee table. It is important for the tray shape to mirror the shape of the ottoman and the size should be bigger than half the dimensions of the ottoman.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
Footrests are called ottomans due to their origins. Traders from Turkey in the Ottoman Empire introduced footrests to Europe during the late 18th century. On 1stDibs, find a range of ottomans.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, bar stools are taller than counter stools. The average height of counter stools is 24 inches, and they are best suited for counter height tables and kitchen islands. Barstools are typically an additional five to six inches taller to fit the height of traditional bar counters. Shop a wide selection of bar stools and counter-height stools on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
The difference between bar stools and counter stools comes down to height. Bar stools are usually between 28 and 32 inches tall to provide comfortable seating at bars and bar-height tables. To pair with kitchen counters and counter-height tables, counter stools are normally 24 to 27 inches tall. Find a large collection of dining stools on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A metamorphic stool is a piece of furniture that can be transformed into a chair by simply lowering or lifting the seat back. You can shop a collection of metamorphic stools and chairs from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 26, 2021
A swivel stool is typically known as a bar stool that allows the seat to rotate 360 degrees. The height of swivel bar stools makes them suitable for use at bars and high tables, and the swivel feature renders these seats even more convenient in such settings. Shop a collection of antique and vintage bar stools from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
A stepping stool is a stool with one or two steps and is self-supporting, usually foldable and portable. It is typically used when you need to retrieve items on a high shelf or in a cabinet. Shop a collection of antique, vintage and contemporary stepping stools from some of the world’s top dealers on 1stDibs.
