Early 20th Century Clothing

Stunning and sumptuous is the only way to describe this amazingly beautiful late 1930's rich velvet opera coat. This beauty is made from a super soft silk velvet blend with a cotton blend lining. It is slightly cinched in at the waist with ruching at the hip, it has raised ruched shoulders and shoulder pads, the jacket fastens with two large velvet covered buttons at the waist and it is collarless. Late 1930s we can see elements of the 1940s style coming into play with the more fitted waist and large shoulders. It is rich and decadent, very well made by DH Evans, it still retains its original label and has a label which reads This material, treated by special patented process will not crush with reasonable wear. These vintage embroidered choli tops are incredibly rare and special: their ages range from the early to mid 20th Century, and all of them were embroidered by hand by the Rabari people in what is now Northwest India. The Rabari people are an ethnic group, who today reside primarily in northern and central India, and Pakistan. They have long been known for their impressive embroidery, which traditionally is painstaking completed by hand in vibrant colors. (The Rabari men are known for dressing in all white, while the women dress very colorfully.) NOTE: This listing is for the CRIMSON (red) top. There are three tops in total, available in different colorways: JADE, INDIGO, CRIMSON. Each one is available in my shop. The embroidery in each top is unique, as described below. All of them were found without the original tie closure, so they have been modified with the covered elastic back strap; the strap attaches to the top with hidden hook/eye closures. The tops vary somewhat in their measurements but note that they will best fit a petite frame; the elastic back does offer some flexibility as it stretches. The arm openings are on the small side, especially at the binding, but on all tops they get roomier at the top towards the shoulder. CRIMSON: This is the oldest top of these three, dating to the early 20th Century. It is mainly a rich red, with indigo patches...

A breathtaking museum quality bridal dance dress dating back to the mid-1920's. Two layers are cleverly designed to complement each other; a fine filet-lace outer layer with a foliate design over an ecru silk-crepe slip layer embroidered with pastel silk-ribbon rosettes. The rosettes are positioned under the filet-lace design so that they appear to be the blooms of the foliate in the lace! The overall effect is quite spectacular, and the dress has survived beautifully over the years. A small designer label in the interior reading "Weathered Misses Shop Chicago", which was the one shop in Chicago able to import French couture. The original owner of the garment said the shop was able to do this by selecting the couture designs overseas. After making their selections, the patterns and materials would be shipped over for fabrication in their own workrooms, allowed them to sidestep the hefty import tax on already completed couture models. The design and construction are identity to Callot Soeurs aesthetic who was known for working with wealth American clients. A rare piece of ethereal fashion history that will become a favorite in your collection.
