Good size and top quality carved wildlife sculptures. On the internet and in certain countries in the world you can find many hand carved wooden elephants, but they are mostly of poor to very poor quality when it comes to the actual details. These two impressive bull elephants on the other hand come with tremendous physical details and whomever hand carved this pair must have studied these majestic creatures for a long time. Besides that, he or she must have been a seasoned sculptor/wood-carver, because it takes a special kind of talent to reach this level of craftsmanship. We have searched the worldwide web and there is not a single wooden elephant sculpture out there that even comes close to having the same quality details and/or such perfect anotomy. It does not take a biologist to see that the artist has perfectly captured the soul of these ancient herbivors and therefor too they have great aesthetic and decorative value. Some of the amazing details of these sizable tuskers are their dried-leather-like skins. You just don't find carved elephants like that, because besides being extremely time consuming, it also takes great skill. Other great features/details are the loose skin around the hips and around the 'armpits', the trunks and mouths, the amazing body postures and ofcourse the stunning ears. They too are unlike anything we ever saw in an elephant sculpture. That too is why it did not take 30 seconds for us to know we had to have these in our gallery on 1stdibs (now also home to the most beautiful elephants on earth). Besides being more realistic than any wooden elephant we have seen or sold before, this pair also is fairly large in size. And with them being carved out of solid teakwood they have quite a bit of weight to them as well. Previous owners have clearly taken very, very good care of these midcentury carved elephants which is why they could not be in better condition either. Rare and stylish bison sculpture lampby EDMOND ETLING. This beautiful and truly artistic Art Deco table lamp comes with the signature "Etling France" and model number. Edmond Laurent Etling (23 June 1878 – around 1940) was a French art dealer, gallery owner, designer and a manufacturer of high-quality decorative objects made of bronze, ceramics and art glass in the Art Deco style. His company La Societe Anonyme Edmond Etling, founded in Paris in 1909, manufactured decorative objects and commissioned sculptors and artists, including Georges Béal, Demétre Chiparus, Claire Colinet, Armand Godard, Geneviève Granger, Marcel Guillard, Maurice Guiraud-Rivière, Géza Hiecz, Fanny Rozet, and Lucille Sévin. Other artists that worked with Etling for casting their statuettes included Aurore Onu, Marcel Bouraine, Pierre Le Faguays, Raymonde Guerbe and André Vincent Becquerel. Etling is known for light blue opalescent objects such as plates and bowls, which were also produced in gray and frosted glass. Most items bore the cast signature "Etling France" followed by a model number related to the Choisy-le-Roi catalogue. In 1910, Etling was awarded the diplome d'honneur at Brussels International (1910). In 1923, he was awarded the Grand Prix in Paris. In 1940, Etling closed his shop due to World War II. Because Etling was of Jewish descent, he was sent to a Nazi concentration camp, where he died. This early 1900s, sculptural table lamp clearly has many typical bison features making it easy to tell from further away as well. Paris” with the Susse cachet; a tiny stamp “France” is impressed into the edge below the cachet. Models in mud are most often cast plaster. It is often in this material that he exhibits in Salons and galleries. The works for sale are cast in bronze. They are entrusted to famous founders like Susse , with whom he signs publishing contracts, or Valsuani . He also works with lesser known smelters like Gatti, Andro or Planquette. Some of his bronzes do not wear a cast iron seal. While there are some large models, most are modest in size, easily finding their place in collectors' homes. Some of his works are terracotta or sandstone. Models were published by Susse both in bronze and terracotta. Terracotta remains raw or is glazed. He also worked at the Sèvres factory in the late 1930s.
