1920s Watches

My shop was recently selected to supply vintage American watches for a premier movie starring some major actors and a world famous director. They were looking for authentic watches that would represent the time period from 1915-1926. I was selected because of my attention to detail and originality. It is a true story of events that took place during the 1920’s. This would of been a perfect watch style for the film. Gruen "Quadron Model 63" Men's Art Deco design wristwatch in 14K yellow gold fill, circa 1930. This Quadron model has a large stepped case with a recessed crown. It was priced at $52.50 in 1930. It is in excellent condition showing only a few tiny specks of brassing to the bezel corners and a little to the tips of the lugs. The case back is excellent and unengaged, it does have a tiny flea bite. Dial is very good. Case measures 38mm long and 24mm wide. The watch is powered by its correct 15-jewel Gruen grade 157 Quadron manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong. In years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even working together with Rolex. In 1925, Gruen introduced the men's Quadron. Similar in concept to the women's Cartouche models, these were rectangular watches containing very high-quality 15-j or 17-j tonneau-shaped movements. A larger movement is generally more reliable and accurate, and is generally more rugged, than a smaller one of the same quality, so the Gruen Cartouche and Quadron, with their case-filling, purpose-built movements performed much better than the small, round movements used by most of their competitors at the time. It was founded over 150 years ago, in 1850 in Berne, Switzerland by the brothers Marc and Emmanuel Didisheim. One cannot avoid in the passion and quest of learning and understanding the beginning of the wristwatch to bypass the story of the hermetic timepieces. “Sealed” pieces were first patented by Francois Borgel in 1891, and the semi hermetic were patented by Charles Rothen, an employee of Francois Borgel’s daughter who took over after her father died. The “fully hermetic” was originally believed to have been first patented by Jean Finger in 1921, but later it was found that it was preceded by Gruen some four years earlier (applied 1918/granted 1919). The final Rolex Oyster patent was originally patented by Perregaux and Perret on October 30, 1925, and bought by Hans Wilsdorf for the launch of the now famous Rolex Oyster in 1926. My first fully hermetic timepiece and probably the most “exotic” watch in my collection even today is my Waltham Dive Watch  This watch has been designed with swing lugs to help it fit the curvature  of the writs, another sophisticated design element of this watch Although this achieved the desired waterproof effect, it had an extra step in winding and setting the watch, the front bezel had to be unscrewed everyday so that the watch could be wound.  However, despite the design drawback, a number of manufacturers, produced watches using this case design, not many have survived It appears that Wilsdorf must have liked the design and bought the patent, because a Rolex watch called the “Hermetic” using this case design was produced from 1924, and similar designs from other manufacturers disappeared. And lest we forget, the Gruen identical patent (more or less), applied for in 1918, was granted 1919.  In January 1921 Jean Finger of Longeau, Berne, Switzerland, was granted Swiss patent number 89276 for a “Montre à remontoire avec boitier protecteur”—literally a watch with a protective box. The watch was placed inside a larger case with a screw-down bezel that formed a hermetic seal totally protecting the watch. Rolex called the “Hermetic” using this case design was produced from 1924, and similar designs from other manufacturers disappeared. The dial is simply signed “Eberhard” and is MINT! Stern was renowned in Switzerland, as well as world wide as the finest dial house of all time. The dial is done in Sterling Silver and the printing is engraved out and filled with enamel, fired in a furnace at 1500 degrees Fahrenheit, polished, fired again and finally polished for the last time. This work is no longer done as it was to expensive and time consuming. The hands are also of the finest workmanship and these are the original hands and done in Blued Steel. This is done by heating the steel up to 640 degrees Fahrenheit and quickly quenching the hands. Lastly, you may be able to see that the case work on this watch features a remarkable detail. It has what is called the "hidden hinge." When the case is closed you cannot see the hinge. Only the worlds finest jewelers know how to make the "hidden hinge." This unique watch was produced for Birks by Longines. Impressively, the dial was produced for Longines, for this watch by the house of Stern Freres. The Stern family were the most renowned dial house in Switzerland. They were so successful that in the early 1930's, after falling into bankruptcy they purchased the Patek Philippe Watch Company. Stern still owns Patek Philippe to this day. The dial on this watch is in flawless original condition. Longines was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz, a Swiss watchmaker. He was also the brother of renowned biologist Louis Agassiz. Agassiz started the company with two partners, lawyers Henri Raiguel and Florian Morel. The company's original name was Raiguel Jeune & Cie. In 1846, Raigeul and Morel retired from the watch industry, leaving Agassiz as sole company head. Several years later, Agassiz brought in his bright, enterprising nephew, trained economist Ernest Francillon, into the business. Francillon was the mastermind behind several impressive innovations that would distinguish the company from its competitors. In 1880, Francillon trademarked the Longines name and its winged hourglass logo. The winged hourglass is a symbol of precision and timekeeping, and it has become one of the most recognizable logos in the watch industry. In 1912, Longines became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games. The company has held this position ever since, and it has been involved in every Olympic Games since then. Longines has also been the official timekeeper of many other major sporting events, including the World Championships in Athletics, the Formula One World Championship, and the America's Cup. In 1931, Longines invented the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch. This watch was designed specifically for Charles Lindbergh, the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The watch featured a special bezel that allowed Lindbergh to calculate his longitude. In my own personal collection, I have the Longines Caliber 13 ZN Chronograph that Commander Richard Byrd took to Antarctica in 1928. It was purchased at the time from Abercrombie and Fitch in New York along with all the other equipment used on the expedition, it still runs well and keeps good, even after 100 years. In the 1980’s I was privileged to view their “collection” in their vaults. It was not open to the public, but a contact arranged it. There were examples of all the finest pocket and wristwatches they had ever produced. This included all the pieces that had received navigational and chronometer ratings. They were not even arranged for presentation; they were merely in drawers. I was shown the collection by their renowned “springer.” I have forgotten his name, but he was responsible for adjusting the watches to win the chronometer ratings. He was probably 80 years old at the time. Interestingly but not surprisingly he could only speak to me about adjusting the hairspring but not about the watch in general. This is something that is not uncommon in the watch world. A craftsman will only know about the part of the watch that they are responsible for. When I produced my own watch in Geneva many years ago, I realized that the dial maker and case maker and other associated craftsmen knew almost nothing about what each other did. This seemed odd to me, but it is that way. A Patek Philippe open face square pocket watch with a platinum case. The dial has black Roman indices and is equipped with the Breguet style hands. The case is polished platinum (the cover is stamped inside with a platinum mark). A monogram decorates the back of the case with the initials G M W. The movement is fully marked with the Patek Philippe maker’s mark, a serial number and a place of origin (Geneve). The case was made by American Watch Company and it is stamped inside A. W. C. CO., platinum, 204954. This vintage Patek watch with the white flat face framed in platinum is a classy accessory. The watch has a loop and can be worn as a pendant. The movement is mechanical, with a manual wind. The watch is in working condition. This vintage pocket watch is made of platinum (stamped). The movement is mechanical, Swiss made. The Patek vintage watch measures 1 5/8” x 1 5/8” x ¼” (4.2 x 4.2 x 0.7 cm) and weighs 73.3 grams. Stamped with Patek Philippe maker's mark and logo, serial number, hallmark for platinum. The overall condition of this Art Deco pocket watch is very good. The watch has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity. We give one year warranty to all our watches. A rare Patek Philippe 14k gold travel clock pendant pocket watch. The watch is circa 1920s and carries the distinct Art Deco features. The square shape face is assembled from the 14k white gold with the frame made of 14k yellow gold. The white gold frame on the back is foldable. The watch has a loop on top and can be hung on a chain as a pendant. It’s an incredibly well-designed watch by Patek Philippe which guarantees the top-notch quality of the item. This is a WOW, WOW... WOW!!! Absolutely stunning Art Deco platinum and diamond Swiss-made, spring-wound wristwatch by Ollendorff circa the late 1920s! It's not just a timepiece, it's a gorgeous, luxurious and hand-crafted piece of historical fine jewelry. 56 diamonds, 2.0cttw. With its tiered rows of 16 round-cut glittering diamonds reaching from either side of the platinum case to the lugs, the design was likely inspired by the iconic terraced crown of the Chrysler Building in New York City. If the diamond and platinum case weren't luxe enough, the original watch band is comprised of two buckles set with 10 diamonds, leading to 30 chevron-shaped platinum links with milgrain detailing, each set with their own diamond as well! The watch has a total of 56 diamonds for approximately 2.0cttw. This watch is a sparkling show-stopper, a rare piece. Here we have a very fancy antique Longines ladies' watch that was mounted in an elegantly designed case and bracelet. Both were crafted from solid 18k white gold and are completely covered with approximately 5.05 carats of fine quality diamonds. There are two bezel set straight baguette cut diamonds - one at the top and one at the bottom - weighing approximately 30 points each with near-colorless G/H color and clean SI1/SI2 clarity.
