What finger is the proposal finger?

1 Answer
The fourth finger, or ring finger, is generally the proposal finger. However, different countries have their own traditions regarding which hand an engagement ring goes on. In the U.S., Canada, Australia, France, the UK, Ireland, Iceland, Portugal, Finland, Turkey, Switzerland, Sweden, Kazakhstan, Bosnia, Mexico, Slovenia, Estonia, Croatia, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, people wear engagement rings on their left hands. People in Hungary, Russia, Austria, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, Belgium, Germany, Bulgaria, Denmark, Poland, Norway, Belarus, Latvia, India, Brazil, Lithuania, Georgia and Ukraine tend to wear engagement rings on their right hands. In some countries, such as Spain and the Netherlands, the ring can go on either hand. Find a large collection of engagement rings on 1stDibs.
