Abstract Composition Drawing, Chinese Poem 1929

1929

About the Item

An interesting and highly decorative chalk drawing by Edvard Andersson, 1929. Drawn on a quite large scale. Signed and dated EA, 1929. A tergo written "Kinesisk dikt" (Chinese Poem) "Kinesisk dikt" (Chinese Poem) is a charcoal drawing by Swedish modernist Edvard Andersson (1891–1967), signed and dated EA 1929. Executed on paper, this drawing showcases Andersson's abstract modernist style. This relatively large drawing has been part of the artist's estate and has been exhibited at several notable exhibitions: Den Frie Udstilling, Copenhagen, 1956, no. 461 (outside the catalog) Vikingsberg, 1961, no. 106 Vikingsberg, 1991, no. 98 Edvard Ferdinand Lassalle Andersson was born in Helsingborg, Sweden. In the 1910s, he studied at the Higher School of Art and Design in Stockholm (now known as Konstfack, the University of Arts, Crafts and Design). He continued his artistic education through study trips to Germany and France. Andersson held solo exhibitions in Helsingborg, Malmö, and Ängelholm and participated in group exhibitions with Sveriges Allmänna Konstförening (Swedish Art Association), Skånes Konstförening (Skåne Art Association), and Helsingborgs Konstförening (Helsingborg Art Association). Andersson's paintings are characterized by strong coloristic effects in a bold abstract language. During the 1940s, his works became increasingly abstract but often contained naturalistic elements. Despite his significant contributions to Swedish art, Andersson remained relatively unknown in his homeland during his lifetime. However, his work gained greater recognition abroad, with exhibitions in prestigious venues in Copenhagen, Paris, and Biarritz. Posthumously he was also exhibited in Paris and Florida. He has been described as a classic modernist with an eclectic approach, borrowing elements from other artists and transforming them into something uniquely his own. His bold use of color and form demonstrates clear influences from the entire modernist avant-garde, including Matisse, Picasso, Brecht, and Miró. The vibrant color shifts in his paintings are particularly reminiscent of Sonia and Robert Delaunay. While all artists draw inspiration from others, only truly brilliant ones succeed in making it their own artistic language—this is what makes Andersson such a fascinating figure in modern art. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Andersson worked as a drawing teacher in Helsingborg. His works include figure paintings, compositions, and coastal landscapes executed in oil, gouache, pastel, and charcoal. His art is represented in several collections, including the Helsingborg Museum. A significant portion of his life's work remained within his family for many years, resulting in limited availability on the art market.

Ink and watercolor drawing by Carl Palme, dated 1921 and signed "CP," captures the narrow alleys of Positano. According to a note on the reverse, it is a study for an oil painting measuring 70x60 cm. Works from the early 20th century by Carl Palme are rare, making this piece particularly significant. Drawing 20x24cm. With frame 34x36cm Carl Adolf Palme (1879 – 1960) was a Swedish painter, draftsman, printmaker, and author. Born in Stockholm to bank director Henrik Palme and Anna Lavonius, he grew up on the Svalnäs estate, which is now a guest home and senior residence. Palme's artistic education began in London at the Slade School of Fine Art (1900–1901). He then studied at Wassily Kandinsky's art school in Munich from 1902 to 1904. In 1907, he moved to Paris and became the first Swedish student of Henri Matisse. Palme was instrumental in founding the Académie Matisse, a collective of young Swedish and Norwegian artists who rented a large studio in Paris. Matisse visited weekly to critique their work. This group included notable artists such as Isaac Grünewald, Sigrid Hjertén, and Einar Jolin...
