About

J. Steven Manolis (American, b. 1948) South Pointe Park, Miami Beach, Florida Watercolor and gouache on paper 18 x 18 inches Widely regarded as one of the most scenic places in south Florida, South Pointe Park is the gem of Miami Beach, where color, life, and nature converge through eyes and into minds. A summer thunderstorm halts this in an instant. Life retreats to the dry safety of the umbrellas that litter the landscape. Color, still present, has faded with the sunlight into an apocalyptic mass of clouds and the grey film of a light misting rain. Nature’s midday siesta ensues. South Point Pointe is Manolis’ exploration of the relationship between nature and civilization. J. Steven Manolis, is an American abstract expressionist artist who paints in both watercolors and acrylics on paper and canvas. He studied for 30 years under the tutelage of world renown colorist, and former student of Hans Hofmann, Wolf Kahn (1927-2020). He began his professional painting career in 2014, and opened Florida’s largest art salon, Manolis Projects, in Miami to accommodate the tremendous scale of many of his works. Since becoming a full-time painter in 2014, Manolis has achieved numerous accolades from art critics, such as, Donald Kuspit, who described him as “the successor to the father of global abstract expressionism, Wassily Kandinsky." He is also known for his series paintings, which emphasize communication through colors. He employs color-fields, gestures, geometrics, and other symbols to express his perspective of his surroundings. Manolis is also, a well known philanthropist in the Arts, having served as Chairman of the Advisory Board for the National Academy of Design in New York City and on the Board of Trustees of the Vermont Studio Center.
