About the Item

This dynamic abstract watercolor by acclaimed New Mexico artist William Lumpkins (1909–2000) exemplifies his signature fusion of vibrant color, spiritual expression, and gestural freedom. Painted in 1986, the composition bursts with fluid forms in vivid shades of blue, orange, yellow, pink, green, gray, and black. Executed on paper, the piece is signed and dated in the lower center. The painting is beautifully presented in a custom white gold leaf frame using all archival materials and UV-protective glass, ensuring long-term preservation. Framed dimensions: 19 ¾ x 22 ½ inches; image size: 11 x 13 ½ inches. This work is a striking example of modern Southwestern abstraction and a fine representation of Lumpkins’ late career. About the Artist: William Lumpkins was born in 1909 on Rabbit Ears Ranch in New Mexico. A pioneer of Southwestern modernism and a founding member of the Transcendental Painting Group (TPG), Lumpkins blended abstract visual language with spiritual exploration influenced by early exposure to Zen Buddhism. Lumpkins began his formal education at the University of New Mexico in 1929, where he met future artistic peers like Peter Hurd and Cady Wells. A pivotal moment came in 1931 when he encountered a John Marin watercolor exhibition in Taos, which inspired his lifelong dedication to abstraction. In addition to being a celebrated painter, Lumpkins was a noted architect, known for his eco-conscious adobe designs in Santa Fe. Despite his architectural success, it was watercolor painting that remained his most expressive outlet. Influenced by Zen koans, he developed a meditative and instinctive approach to art, earning recognition as the most intuitive member of the TPG. Lumpkins’ work is held in major institutions and private collections, celebrated for its harmonious balance of color, movement, and spiritual depth. This 1986 watercolor is a compelling and collectible piece from one of New Mexico’s most visionary artists.
