About the Item

Everything about Amalia Schulthess's work is wonderfully delicate. Our gallery usually features abstract works by this artist. We're very gifted to have this rare figurative and signed color pencil drawing in our hands. A woman adorned in a harlequin blouse stands with folded arms, accompanied by an owl perched upon her shoulder. Seeing an owl is intriguing, as we are more accustomed to parrots in such situations. The focal point lies in the intensity of their gazes. The woman's eyes are black and pupilless, yet enhanced by eyelashes; the gaze takes on expressiveness, partially framed by black eyebrows in downward movement. Could she be a circus performer or perhaps an owl tamer? The woman's face, painted white, presents a red mouth that is contained in another drawn mouth wider. Her dark hair is elegantly arranged in a bun. The expression given to the owl's eyes carries a sense of amusement. Amalia Schulthess was born in Zurich in 1918 and died in 2021. Paul Klee, a friend of her father, had been a key source of inspiration to Amalia; he encouraged her to express herself and commit to the pursuit of artmaking. After World War II, she moved to New York, where she met and became friends with Piet Mondrian encouraged her to paint and gave her many good ideas for exercises in painting that could prove helpful to her technique. At this time, she was primarily painting with oil and drawing with pastels and colored pencils. In 1941 she moved to Los Angeles, where until the 1960s, she focused on exhibiting her paintings in galleries and museums in California and New Mexico, an area she was drawn to because of the natural landscape and indigenous culture. By the late 60s, she began exploring the three-dimensional medium after Andrew Dasburg suggested the abstract nature of her two-dimensional works might translate well to sculpture. Amalia’s sculptures are very much part of the avant-garde Modernist discourse. She divided her time between living in Los Angeles and Florence, Italy, to learn more. She was involved in numerous shows in Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico, California, New York, Switzerland, Italy, and France. Her sculptures reside in numerous countries and states. The artwork sits in its original light wood frame.

"Party in Venice" Satirical Drawing by Michael Dormer
Located in Pasadena, CA
This panoramic original drawing by artist Michael Dormer is a tender and nostalgic portrait of California surf and counterculture in the 1960s, capturing the unique personalities that populated the scene. Known for creating “Hot Curl,” a six-foot, potbellied surfer statue that became a fixture on Windansea Beach in La Jolla, Dormer established a visual icon for the “Kustom Kulture” movement and Lowbrow Art. Hot Curl, with his distinctive nose, rope belt holding up his baggies, and laid-back posture, embodied the irreverent spirit of California surf culture alongside other icons like Rick Griffin’s Murphy and Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s Rat Fink...

"Mighty Resignation" Black and White Contemporary Drawing by Mac Mechem
Located in Pasadena, CA
This Mac Mechem's drawing features a seated nude man draped in a small loincloth. Sitting in a wood-crafted chair, his gaze fixed downward as though he were brooding over some bad news. Despite the defeatist posture, his physique radiates a stark contrast—the sculpted body exudes strength and athleticism through pronounced abdominal lines, robust thighs, and defined biceps. Both hands rest passively on his knees, amplifying the sense of resignation portrayed in the artwork. The artist signed in the lower right part of the artwork. Mac Mechem, a figurative contemporary painter...

'Towards Le Scathe Cove'. Contemporary Landscape, Rural, Sea, Ocean, Beach Blue
By Sophia Milligan
Located in Penzance, GB
'Towards Le Scathe Cove'. Contemporary mixed media landscape painting, Cornwall Original Artwork, Unframed _________________ January morning, heavy swell and a strong southwester, rain imminent, sheltering beneath lichen furred granite outcrops. A plein air painting from the series 'Holan ha Dor' (Meaning 'Salt and Earth in Cornish). West Cornwall is a harshly beautiful peninsula, jutting out into the wild tireless ocean, shaped and moulded by powerful salt laden Atlantic winds, and criss-crossed by ancient, tangled hedgerows. Drawn to the immediacy of moments, underpinned by enduring narratives, Sophia's fluid expressive paintings explores the flux and balance in the nature of all things: The freedom of the air and solidity of the soil; Of anchored stone and rhythmic water; Of human narratives written in the wild landscapes; In the sensual interplay of light and shadow. They capture an essence of the equilibrium between wild raw energy and serene stillness; chaos and harmony; and the enduring and the effervescent. Mixed media on watercolour paper Signed and inscribed Unframed 23 x 30cm / 9 x 12 inches __________________________ About The Artist Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. With resonating ripples of intuition and instinct Sophia illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'. Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in prestigious international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago...

Graphite with white heightening on greenish beige wove paper, 17 1/4 x 12 1/2 (437 x 317 mm). Scattered edge wear, tears and losses around the perimeter of the drawing. Margins are wide and the image area is clean and intact. Scattered light soiling and toning, all consistent with age. A dramatic image by a highly skilled draftsman, this works is likely a life study of the Hellenistic sculptural masterpiece of the same title, which is housed in the Uffizi's collection of ancient statues...

At Tunbridge Well
By Agostino Aglio
Located in Middletown, NY
Black crayon and graphite with white heightening on blue handmade laid paper. Adhered at all four corners to a period support, on which the title and an illegible date (perhaps 1815) appear to be written in the artist's hand. ________ Aglio was born in Cremona is 1777 and his artistic talent was recognized early in his life. He was promised a place at the University in Milan by the Holy Roman Emperor, however, his formal education was upended before it even began by the invasion of Italy and Austria by Napoleon. Aglio joined the war effort and fought in a series of major battles near Venice before becoming seriously ill. At the age of about 23 he was released from duty, and traveled to Rome to focus on his health, and landscape painting. In Rome, Aglio studied with the renowned artist Campovecchio. At the invitation of well known British architect William Wilkins (designer of the National Gallery and University College London), Aglio relocated to London in 1803. He made London his permanent home, and married Letitia Clarke in 1805. He enjoyed a lucrative career painting frescoes in the interiors of high society townhouses, country manors, and major London concert halls and theaters. Most notably, Aglio painted multiple official portraits of Queen Victoria...
