Giorgia Oldano
Hawk black & white pencil drawing, Italian contemporary painter

2018

About the Item

Giorgia Oldano is a young Italian artist specialized in wildlife. She masters drawing and monotype. In order to construct her paintings, the artist travels a lot around Italy and the world and her first inspiration is en plein air. Afterwards she photographs her subjects, and uses her pictures to remember animal details and proportions. Her preferred medium is pencil, and her absolute master over it permeates through her artworks, conferring them a strong and unique identity. From early on in her life, Giorgia Oldano used painting as a way to express herself. Now the artist does this by denouncing the slow disappearance of precious forms of life, by making the subjects of her paintings animal species that are facing extinction. This effect is achieved by capturing the gaze of these animals, revealing the emotions that arise when one engages with nature. To translate her personal connection with nature to her paintings, in 2014 Giorgia decided to abandon color to devote herself to pencil drawings. This technique allowed her to evolve, giving her the opportunity to delve into a more accurate study of animals in their natural habitats. In 2019 the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum acquired the work Mr and Mrs Punk, which became part of the permanent collection of the historic US institution. She is represented by Salamon Fine Art, Milan. Awards § In 2012 she won the renowned award of Italian champion of Natural Drawing (Oasis drawing nature competition), which allowed her to live a unique experience in Africa between Malawi and Zambia. § In 2013 she won the title of International Artist in the Mammal category of the BCC Wildlife Artist Competition (UK). § In 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019 e 2020 her paintings were selected to be exposed at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wisconsin, USA, for the prestigious yearly exhibition Birds in Art. § In 2017 her Falco Araeus was the winner of Selvatica Festival, the most important national wildlife festival in Italy; furthemore the acquisition of the oeuvre she gained a solo exhibition at Palazzo Gromo Losa, in Biella, sponsored by the Fondazione della Cassa di Risparmio di Biella.

Whispers & Hisses Series: 'In Panic'
Located in New York, NY
This series was inspired by a 1950’s era instruction manual found while clearing out my father’s basement workshop. The How To Light A Model manual employed voluptuous female models to teach lighting techniques to amateur photographers such as my father. Diagrams plot the prescribed direction of the lights. The nude women hold the pose, their lips bright red and their feet dirty from the studio floor. As naked props for the authoritarian photographer, their vulnerability seems palpable. This work visualizes the human condition as a balance between feral and fabricated worlds. Vivid, oversized creatures embody instinctual energy. Wax seals, gold spheres and text-like marks signify rational structures. One speaks in a whisper, the other in a hiss. Winifred McNeill...
