About the Item
Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the best-known and most intriguing artists from the "Painters Eleven" group.
Town's reputation was established in the late 1950s with a series of mysterious unique abstract prints ("Single Autographic Prints") that included collage elements. In 1956, he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale with these works.
Over the following decades, the artist continued reinventing his aesthetic, regularly changing medium and mood. He was nicknamed the Picasso of Canada due to his constant evolution. By the mid-1960s, he was considered Canada's most famous artist.
While Town made a significant contribution to Canadian abstraction, he created figurative works throughout his career.
His "Toy Horse" series is arguably his most successful and iconic body of figurative work. Inspired by a Christmas gift, Town reimagined the subject through a number of variations during 1976-1983, ranging from confident paintings to meticulous almost wire-like geometric designs.
This evocative work on paper is a striking example from this series, depicting the subject's bold and exaggerated silhouette in a dramatic wash of monochromatic black ink.
Today, Town's work is represented in prestigious collections across North America including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Guggenheim (New York).

Harold Town
Harold Town remains one of the most accomplished and fascinating characters from the Painters Eleven group. While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists, who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse, ever-changing and not restricted to painting. Somewhat ironically, his first significant body of work, which established his reputation as a group of monotypes - which he called Single Autographic Prints. Town was introduced to lithography by fellow painters Eleven member Oscar Cahen. The Single Autographic Prints were first exhibited in 1954. Two years later the National Gallery of Canada would successfully nominate him to represent the nation at the Venice Biennale. By the end of the decade, Town received international accolades for these works and had become one of the most admired artists in Canada. This complex mauve-hued example of a Single Autographic Print is Harold Town at his best; layered, rich colors creating a hypnotic inimitable abstract surface. This type of SAP is particularly sought-after as it is one of the earliest and features a distinct graphic collage-like composition made up of blocky shapes. Such elements would become signatures in Town's oeuvre. An essential work for any collection of post-war Canadian abstraction.

Elin Siân Blake is a contemporary Brecon-based artist, originally from the South Wales valleys, whose work delves deeply into the rich tapestry of Welsh heritage. Through various mediums, she creates poignant reflections of societal and cultural issues that have shaped the Welsh identity.
Born in 1981, Elin Siân Blake began producing commissioned artwork from an early age, focussing on the traditional Welsh ponies and landscapes of her childhood. She was particularly inspired by the agricultural and equestrian events she attended. As a teenager she spent all her spare money on art supplies. Blake graduated from the University of Glamorgan in 2002 with a degree in graphic design and illustration, but quickly realised that she wanted to create conventional paintings, rather than producing digital images. She then spent several years living on the road in vintage vehicles, painting the scenes and characters she encountered on her travels.
