Brittany Spaniel with Pheasant

About the Item

This artwork titled "Brittany Spaniel and Pheasant" c.1950, in a watercolor on paper by Russian/French artist Jean Herblet A.K.A. Boris O'Klein, 1887-1983. It is signed at the lower left corner by the artist. The artwork size is 17.5 x 13.5 inches, framed size is 21.5 x 17.5 inches. Framed in original wood frame, with brown/green velvet liner. It is in excellent condition, The velvet is slightly damaged at the upper left corner, see picture #8. About the artist: Boris O'Klein, born Arthur Boris O'Klein a French artist and cartoonist. An anthropomorphic artist, he is known for his numerous prints and watercolors of dogs getting up to mischief. The prints are generally called "The Naughty Dogs" or "The Dirty Dogs" or "The Dirty Dogs of Paris." O'Klein was born in Moscow, Russia. His family emigrated to the Alsace when he was a boy. After serving on behalf of the French in World War I, he moved to Paris. O'Klein's period of greatest activity as an artist was during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. During his lifetime, much of his output appears to have been purchased by tourists on trips to Paris. O'Klein also painted with similar technique and in a more classical style many serious animal subjects, often a hunting dog with a duck, under the pseudonym "Jean Herblet". While O'Klein was a prolific artist and produced many watercolors, the greatest part of his output consists of prints, either color lithographs or engravings heightened with hand-painted touches of watercolor. Many of these prints appear to have been produced in O'Klein's later years and after his death, and are still produced to this day. The two main themes of O'Klein's art are public urination; and male-female flirtation or desire. The numerous scenes by O'Klein of dogs lined up against walls or beside trees to urinate are part of what gives the prints their incendiary appeal for some viewers. In other prints, a number of male dogs will follow a female dog with an air of evident interest.

Through various mediums, she creates poignant reflections of societal and cultural issues that have shaped the Welsh identity. Born in 1981, Elin Siân Blake began producing commissioned artwork from an early age, focussing on the traditional Welsh ponies and landscapes of her childhood. She was particularly inspired by the agricultural and equestrian events she attended. As a teenager she spent all her spare money on art supplies. Blake graduated from the University of Glamorgan in 2002 with a degree in graphic design and illustration, but quickly realised that she wanted to create conventional paintings, rather than producing digital images. She then spent several years living on the road in vintage vehicles, painting the scenes and characters she encountered on her travels. Blake taught herself oil painting using library...
