Provenance:
The Elaine Horwitch Galleries
Honored as the official artist for the cover of The Santa Fe Opera's 2010 Season Program and its pair of Season Posters, John Fincher has for more than 40 years created art that celebrates what the artist terms modestly "the trappings of the American West." These "trappings" encapsulate references that are both familiar and totemic of the Great American Frontier and its mythic role as a reservoir of pride, strength, individualism and renewal.
Distinguished by a singular blend of sensuality and authentic realism, his art is intended to explore diverse art historical and personal references to offer new understandings of America's natural and cultural landscapes. Exercising an economy of means, his work is focused on stirring emotional resonance from a combination of balanced composition, nuanced brushwork, dramatic shadowing, and the application of intense points of contrasting colors to punctuate significant visual elements.
He does images of towering poplars, pine limbs set against crystalline skies, richly hued desert hillsides, arrays of colors within canopies of aspens turning, and aggressively cropped prickly pears to symbolize cultural meanings and representations of the mythic American West.
Elsewhere, as in an enigmatic painting of a lone padlock and a suite of serially repeated images of shaving brushes, the artist hopes to transmute commonplace objects into powerful expressions that compound the equivocal with the intensely diaristic.
Born in Hamilton, Texas, in 1941, John Fincher earned his MFA from University of Oklahoma in 1966. The artist's works have been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions and have been represented in important group exhibitions at such significant venues as SITE Santa Fe, the Aspen Art Museum, and the National Art Museum of China, Beijing.
His work resides in major public institutions including the Smithsonian Institution, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Wichita Art Museum, and the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History.

In the "Guinness Book of Records" as one of the most reproduced artists in America, Jane Wooster Scott began copying work by folk artists such as Grandma Moses and gradually evolved into her own style. A turning point for her career was a joint showing at the Ankrum Gallery in Los Angeles with her comedian friend, Jonathan Winters. It was mostly a business crowd, and she sold 40 paintings in an hour.
Scott grew up in the Philadelphia area and moved West following her dream to be a movie star. She quickly learned that goal was not for her, but became the host of a talk show where she interviewed movie stars. Then she married and quit that work, becoming a full-time mother.
Currently (2002) she resides in homes in Los Angeles and Sun Valley...

Whispers & Hisses Series: 'In Panic'
Located in New York, NY
This series was inspired by a 1950’s era instruction manual found while clearing out my father’s basement workshop. The How To Light A Model manual employed voluptuous female models to teach lighting techniques to amateur photographers such as my father. Diagrams plot the prescribed direction of the lights. The nude women hold the pose, their lips bright red and their feet dirty from the studio floor. As naked props for the authoritarian photographer, their vulnerability seems palpable.
This work visualizes the human condition as a balance between feral and fabricated worlds. Vivid, oversized creatures embody instinctual energy. Wax seals, gold spheres and text-like marks signify rational structures. One speaks in a whisper, the other in a hiss.

The Remains, A series of 10 works
An insect approaches a crumpled paper doily to eat what remains of a party. This series explores the moment when the trimmings become debris and presumptions of human control are upended. The text-like marks on white vertical rectangles are deliberate, but indecipherable. They appear as if a poem, written in an ancient language, that honors this eternal cycle of destruction and regeneration.
