Many people are unaware that Nelson Mandela turned his hand to art in his 80's as a way of leaving a legacy for his family. He spent time with an art tutor and learnt to draw. In 2002, when creating his artworks he told Belgravia Gallery of his desire to become a full time artist when he retired.
It is common knowledge that even in his later years Nelson Mandela—Madiba—would spend hours with his herd of cattle that populate his Qunu fields. As a young boy, he tended to the cattle and learned how to work with these magnificent beasts, guiding and leading them with words and song as opposed to the crack of a whip. This image reflects the respect and adoration he held for the animals.
