About the Item

In a heroic standing pose on a cliff, set against the grandeur of nature, female illustrator Adelaide Hiebel depicts an idealized double portrait of Hiawatha and her husband, Minnehaha. Understanding the emotive use of the color the artist chooses, a glorious sunset composed of rich orange blending into a bright yellow is used to communicate the festive nature of the moment. "Hiawatha's Honeymoon." The couple looks up and out optimistically to symbolize their future. Signed lower right This is a large painting and in person makes a statement with not just it's size but also with its bold color palette and graphic composition with figures defined by strong light. The present work is published as a Gerlach-Barklow calendar and appears on page 200 of Vintage Illustration: Discovering America's Calendar Artists 1900-1960 by Rick & Charlotte Martin (Collectors Press, 1997). There are numerous examples of original Heibel pastel with misspelled signatures, presumably from the same calendar company printing draftsman who added her signature to completed works for printing purposes.
