About the Item

Story illustration for “Crazy Waters” by Leonard H. Nason for The Saturday Evening Post, published January 22, 1938, page 10. The full caption reads: “The sea was upon them. It picked up the surfboat, whirled it sideways, hammered it with its driving wreckage.” The story depicts a scene of chaos as a torrential downpour engulfs a town, unleashing a devastating flood. Caught up in the excitement, two children, driven by a desire for adventure, feign distress to secure a thrilling ride in the rescue boat. However, their initial exhilaration quickly gives way to fear as they find themselves deposited far from home. Recognizing the children's distress, the compassionate sailors, despite the treacherous conditions, bravely navigate the swirling waters to return the frightened children to the safety of their parents. During their perilous journey back, the rescuers encounter a submerged farmyard, where they discover a pig struggling against the raging current. Initially mistaken for a lifeless body bobbing in the floodwaters, the men swiftly pull the distressed animal to safety. Medium: Charcoal on board Artwork Dimensions: 29.5" x 23" Signed: Lower Right

"A Vision at Sea" is an acrylic painting with graphite on wood measuring 22" high by 28" wide. It is a fraught moment for man and dog in the boat – they may be the Vision of the title but they are also struck by a vision they alone can see. Note the antlers at the front of the boat, the harsh and ragged shoreline, oars in the water – arguably in the tradition of storm-tossed poets at sea, fighting the Fates as much as the power of Nature. Press Release 2018: "Williams acknowledges a large range of influences on his vision: the moral lessons embodied in the works of 17th century engraver Jacques Lagniet, the darkling phantasms and tragic reportage of Goya’s Caprichos and Disasters of War, and the personal mythologizing of the late paintings of Philip Guston. Such works echo throughout Williams social surrealist re-visioning." – George Del Barrio, Vanderbilt Republic, Brooklyn NY Dale Williams...
