About the Item

Signed lower right, "Dignimont" for André Dignimont (French, 1891-1965) and painted circa 1950. A substantial, mid-century interior showing a man and three women in various stages of undress engaged in a variety of pursuits. In the foreground, a seated nude attends to her sewing while a second nude leans against a balcony window gazing at a harbor filled with the wooden masts of sailing boats. To the left, a partially clothed woman solicits the attention of a young man holding a pipe. Born in Paris, André Dignimont first studied at the College Juilly and then worked in London before returning to Paris to study at Académie Julian. A prolific artist and illustrator, his work reflects his love of provocative women, the demi-monde and bohemian café life through which he documents his unique insight into the mid-century, Parisian experience. The recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards, Dignimont exhibited widely and with success over four decades, including at the Salon D’Automne, the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Tuileries, and Salon de L’Araiguée. He was also a notable book illustrator with illustration credits for over fifty books. We are pleased to offer a particularly well-composed figural work by the artist, dating to the immediate post-war period and showing unusually fresh, unfaded color Reference: E. By Pierre Laurent Brenot

Woman is a watercolor on paper realized by Pierre Laurent Brenot (1913-1998). Good conditions, aged, except some traces of humidity around the margins that don't affect the image. Here the artwork represents a woman in vivid colors. The artwork is depicted skillfully through confident and soft strokes in a well-balanced composition and harmonious colors. Pierre-Laurent Brenot (1913-1998) In 1928, he entered the École Estienne where he attended classes for three years. Then he continued his training as a designer with Fernand Hertenberger. Pierre-Laurent Brenot's gifts of observation and precision in his pencil stroke were immediately noticed.During the fashion years (from 1936 to 1950),he was hired by Monsieur Chatard, a great tailor for men and women, in his Fashionable store, at number 16 boulevard Montmartre. He then created a line of men's suits. On his momentum, he produced numerous fashion designs for other great couturiers (Christian Dior, Jacques Fath, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Nina Ricci, Jeanne Lafaurie...
