Born in London, Duncan was apprenticed to the studio of Robert Havell, principal aquatint engraver of Audubon’s Birds of America. He subsequently opened his own engraving studio, primarily creating print works for Fores of Piccadilly. In 1826 he received a commission to engrave the maritime paintings of William John Huggins. This commission sparked his interest in marine paintings and he went on to become one of Britain’s foremost marine watercolourists. A prolific exhibitor, he showed at the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists and Old and New Watercolour Societies.
