Title: French Gouache Portrait Study of Three Navajo and Kumeyaay Figures by Emile GALLOIS (1882-1965, French) Signed: Yes Medium: Original gouache painting on thick unframed paper, Size: 14 inches (height) x 10.75 inches (depth) Conditon: Very good Provenance: From a private French collection Description: This remarkable gouache painting by Emile Gallois (1882-1965) presents a detailed ethnographic portrait study of three Indigenous American figures, representing Navajo and Kumeyaay individuals. Gallois’ precise linework and vivid colors capture distinctive facial features, cultural attire, and traditional adornments, offering a rich and respectful depiction of these Indigenous identities. Key features: Cultural & Historical Representation: This study portrays a Navajo elder, a young Kumeyaay woman, and a Navajo man, each dressed in traditional clothing and jewelry. Intricate Detail & Expression: The elder Navajo figure, wrapped in a gray woven shawl, reflects wisdom and resilience. The Kumeyaay woman, adorned with blue beaded jewelry and an elegant hairstyle, embodies grace. The Navajo man, wearing a beaded headband and a green tunic, represents strength and heritage. Vivid Yet Naturalistic Palette: The earthy browns, soft grays, and deep greens bring depth to the composition, while the beaded accessories add vibrant accents. Illustrative Precision: Gallois' characteristic clean lines and attention to detail make this piece both aesthetic and historically significant. Collector’s Appeal: An exceptional addition for collectors of Native American portraiture, ethnographic art, and early 20th-century illustration. Gallois, a renowned French Impressionist and illustrator, exhibited widely at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris and was known for his carefully researched depictions of global Indigenous cultures. This portrait study stands as a testament to his dedication to cultural representation and artistic excellence.

By McKenney & Hall

He brought with him an accomplished artist, James Otto Lewis, who sketched those willing to participate. A large number of the most influential Indian chiefs and warriors were later invited to come to Washington in 1821 to meet President Monroe. McKenney commissioned the prominent portrait painter Charles Bird King...
