About the Item
Named "The Gate", this drawing by the masterful artist Frank Girard is created with Chinese ink, pigments, and watercolors on Arches paper. When creating large drawings, the artist uses this high-quality paper specially made for engraving or watercolors since it does not curl when he moistens it to make the background with pigment and shellac. The black margin around the drawing that appears in the main image is not part of this artwork, it was used to make a contrast to show the fringed edges of the Arches paper.
In the lower right corner of this artwork, is a gate that opens towards our inner life, so that we discover and go towards our inner castle where we are both the subjects and the king. However, as we can see the path is not easy. Hidden in this large landscape, there is a large part of small drawings inspired by an engraving by Bruegel (1525-1569), one of the most significant of Dutch and Flemish Renaissance artists. All of these small drawings have a meaning that most often refers to Judeo-Christian stories or myths, the foundations of our Western societies.
This drawing is not framed.
Sharing the taste for details as a common point with Bruegel, Frank Girard keeps on telling us through his drawings the stories of his encounters and of himself. As he once stated:
"I live in a district called “The written tree”. I don't know if this pretty name has not made its way in my head, but one day I started to draw inhabited trees and grass, with humans in nature, carried by nature, buried in this nature where we come from and where we live. My house is in the forest, I have trees all around me all day. I take care of them. They were there before me, they will stay after me. We observe each other with kindness. When I look at them, I see lots of people in the shade of the leaves, they tell me their adventures, the great myths, biblical or others, and always a quote from Venice. I am in love with this marvel, this total work of art which is this floating city."
