About the Item
Joan Carl Strauss, artist and activist in the Los Angeles art world, left behind a refined and committed body of work. Trained in Cleveland and at the Art Institute of Chicago, she developed a sculptural practice rooted in clarity of form and the observation of human gesture. Her drawings share this compositional precision.
In this study, Strauss isolates a moment of play—more precisely, a confrontation. Two basketball athletes are caught in motion: one propelling forward, the other resisting. Their limbs form tight diagonals. The contours are clean, without excess; lines are structured like an architectural draft. Volume is suggested, and presence emerges from the rhythm and direction of the artist’s hand.
She chooses what to include: two players, a ball, and a basket. The rest—the court, context, and audience—is omitted. The eye is guided not by narrative but by line and tilt. The white of the paper becomes active, like the space between sculptures. What remains is motion, pressure, and proximity.
As in much of her work, Strauss composes with restraint. The drawing is silent, but nothing is arbitrary. Space is activated by absence as much as by form. Everything leads to the suspended moment where balance and force radiate unrelenting power.

"Mighty Resignation" Black and White Contemporary Drawing by Mac Mechem
Located in Pasadena, CA
This Mac Mechem's drawing features a seated nude man draped in a small loincloth. Sitting in a wood-crafted chair, his gaze fixed downward as though he were brooding over some bad news. Despite the defeatist posture, his physique radiates a stark contrast—the sculpted body exudes strength and athleticism through pronounced abdominal lines, robust thighs, and defined biceps. Both hands rest passively on his knees, amplifying the sense of resignation portrayed in the artwork.
The artist signed in the lower right part of the artwork.
