Joan Carl Strauss
Untitle Study ("Basketball Players") Drawing #1 by Joan Carl Strauss

1975

About the Item

Joan Carl Strauss, artist and activist in the Los Angeles art world, left behind a refined and committed body of work. Trained in Cleveland and at the Art Institute of Chicago, she developed a sculptural practice rooted in clarity of form and the observation of human gesture. Her drawings share this compositional precision. In this study, Strauss isolates a moment of play—more precisely, a confrontation. Two basketball athletes are caught in motion: one propelling forward, the other resisting. Their limbs form tight diagonals. The contours are clean, without excess; lines are structured like an architectural draft. Volume is suggested, and presence emerges from the rhythm and direction of the artist’s hand. She chooses what to include: two players, a ball, and a basket. The rest—the court, context, and audience—is omitted. The eye is guided not by narrative but by line and tilt. The white of the paper becomes active, like the space between sculptures. What remains is motion, pressure, and proximity. As in much of her work, Strauss composes with restraint. The drawing is silent, but nothing is arbitrary. Space is activated by absence as much as by form. Everything leads to the suspended moment where balance and force radiate unrelenting power.

Another clean line drawing by Brennan, done with sharpie, or marker. The lines created are bold and precise. A remarkable piece by Brennan. Clean and thick lines made with ink, featuring a clown-like figure very different from the usual clowns existing for the kid's fun. The background contrasts the clown's attire. "Paddling Woman" Watercolor Minimalist Painting #1 by Christopher Paul Cobb
Located in Pasadena, CA
"Paddling Woman" is a minimalist watercolor that captures the essence of the human experience. Through the delicate strokes of a brush dipped in watercolor, the artist has conveyed the inner turmoil of the main subject, which may be remembering or dreaming of past or previous journeys. Her long, curly hair cascading down her shoulders symbolizes the wildness within us all. The simple black ink lines that create the birds and ships in the background add a touch of innocence and childlike wonder, evoking a sense of nostalgia for a simpler time. The signature is in the right corner, and it is dated (September 1995). It sits in a simple black wood frame. Christopher Paul Cobb is an American artist born in the 20th Century. He is the grandson of baseball great player Ty Cobb.
