About the Item

Joan Carl Strauss was a Los Angeles-based artist, educator, and civic voice whose prolific work spans sculpture, painting, and public commissions. A graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, she forged her career on the West Coast, where her exhibitions and activism rooted her as a committed voice in postwar American art. Her work reflects formal clarity and a consistent engagement with human gesture and dignity. In this study drawing, Strauss reduces the athletic encounter to its essential forms: limbs articulated in a dynamic arc, faces pared down to empty planes, energy held in contour. The movement is vertical, converging in an upward thrust. Hands rise, intercept, and suspend the ball at a precise moment of equilibrium. Her line is assertive but never aggressive—each curve modulates the force of the action. Negative space is essential. The voids amplify the figures’ motion, directing the eye to what lies outside the frame—what has just happened or is about to. The choice to exclude the ground and crowd isolates the players in a space of pure form and timing. Strauss’s work was widely exhibited across California, and Paideia Gallery in Los Angeles represented her. This drawing exemplifies her sculptural sense of volume and her focus on the human body in motion, resolute, exact, and humane.

"Mighty Resignation" Black and White Contemporary Drawing by Mac Mechem
Located in Pasadena, CA
This Mac Mechem's drawing features a seated nude man draped in a small loincloth. Sitting in a wood-crafted chair, his gaze fixed downward as though he were brooding over some bad news. Despite the defeatist posture, his physique radiates a stark contrast—the sculpted body exudes strength and athleticism through pronounced abdominal lines, robust thighs, and defined biceps. Both hands rest passively on his knees, amplifying the sense of resignation portrayed in the artwork. The artist signed in the lower right part of the artwork. Mac Mechem, a figurative contemporary painter...
