Katherine Filice
Unveiling I - Contemporary Figure Drawing in Pen, Ink + Graphite

2020

About the Item

In the first of "The Unveiling" series of works, Katherine Filice's signature hatching decorates part of a baroque-style form drawing. The subject matter is reminiscent of classical marble sculpture. As the form is left incomplete, the compositional choices mimetically reflect this in omitting certain details - such as the base being left in negative space. In this contrast between intentionally hatched space within the figure, areas of intentional negative space, and the shading of the areas in shadow, this odd - yet successful - trinity implies a sense of still completeness. 27"x21.75" (Framed) 20x15 Image size We will ship this via standard parcel boxed with internal support to maintain the integrity of the piece. • Pondering being Naked - Sexy Girl taking off Bikini - Female Cartoonist
    Located in Miami, FL
This work clearly has homosexual overtones which in the mid-'40s was as daring as showing nudity. I am not sure if this was the artist's intention but the salesgirl and the model look identical and she signs it twice Shermond. Added to this is a strobe light effect where the model's image is partly replicated giving the impression of 2 figures. She's lost in thought pondering the notion of removing the bows and seeing the consequences. Meanwhile, the sales girls ( perhaps her alta ego - perhaps an admirer ) eggs her on. Caption: "You can always remove the bows if you think they're too fussy." Cover cartoon for unknown publication - Signed "Shermund" twice in the lower right image, dated on verso, and captioned in graphite in the lower margin. Original Matte and not framed - Barbara Shermund...
