About the Item

"Juliette et sa servante" & "Juliette au balcon" Paire de dessins à la mine de plomb, encre, aquarelle et gouache 23,5×10,5 cm et 25×14 cm respectivement / 33,6×41,6 cm encadrés Signature en bas à droite de "Juliette et sa servante" Les deux dessins sont présentés dans un même encadrement avec verre anti-reflet anti UV Historique: Succession de Madame Lion-Comerre (Petite-fille du peintre Léon Comerre), Atelier du peintre Léon Comerre (1850-1916), Drouot, févier 2003, lot n°196 bis --- Ces deux dessins de Léon Comerre sont à relier à la célèbre tragédie de William Shakespeare Roméo et Juliette, comme le révèlent les titres inscrits au dos des feuilles : "Juliette et sa servante" et "Juliette au balcon". Ils figurent deux moments clés dans le destin de la jeune héroïne : tout d’abord les préparatifs, avec sa nourrice, pour le bal donné par sa famille à l’occasion de ses 14 ans, puis sur son balcon, dans la fameuse scène où, se croyant seule, elle exprime son amour pour Roméo et l’entend lui déclarer le sien en retour. Formé à Lille puis à l’École des beaux-arts dans l’atelier d’Alexandre Cabanel, Léon Comerre obtient le Grand Prix de Rome de peinture en 1875 et mène par la suite une très belle carrière officielle, s’illustrant tout particulièrement en tant que peintre d’histoire et portraitiste. Il est aussi un décorateur apprécié, auteur en 1890 pour le foyer du théâtre de l’Odéon de deux panneaux décoratifs représentant deux héroïnes de Racine: Phèdre et Célimène. Il est enfin parfois illustrateur, par exemple pour une poésie des "Châtiments" dans l’édition nationale de Victor Hugo. Nous n’avons toutefois pas pu relier nos dessins à un décor, une édition de la tragédie de Shakespeare ou un programme de théâtre ou d’opéra ; il semblerait donc qu’il s’agisse de projets n’ayant pas donné lieu à une commande. Ils témoignent toutefois des qualités de dessinateur et de coloriste de Léon Comerre, qui dépeint les émotions des personnages en quelques traits subtilement rehaussés de couleurs délicates.
