About the Item

The original artwork Monaca della Sapienza is a beautiful watercolour on ivory-colored paper made by the virtuous artist Michela De Vito in 1820 ca. Hand-titled "Monaca della Sapienza" in black ink on the lower margin at the center. Excellent conditions. This beautiful and solemn watercolor on paper represents a nun of Wisdom picking up a lemon from her plant. She is wearing a long white garment and a black veil. The use of lines and colors in this lovely artwork, with soft and diffused chiaroscuro, fully reflect the artist's style. Michela De Vito In the XIX century, Michela De Vito native of Abruzzi, worked in Naples and became a famous artist. She was maybe the daughter or sister of Camillo de Vito, a reknown painter of guaches above all of views and scenes of everyday life. Sometimes she is mistaken with Michele de Vito. “A refined painter, very skilled when it came to drawings, she had the characteristic to make her subject more gentle, compared to her male collegues"; this is how De Rosa and Trastulli describe her.
