About the Item

Watercolor on archival paper 23 x 17 inches in white-painted custom wood frame with 8ply mat 19 x 13 inches unframed This whimsical watercolor drawing on archival paper was made by the creative duo Nicholas Kahn & Richard Selesnick as part of their series "Madame Lulu's Book of Fate", wherein the artists celebrate the carnivalesque with a cast of peculiar costumed characters. In this illustration, a cluster of sienna-colored buildings are stacked in the shape of a human figure. Surrounded by a spring-green landscape and bearing flowers--a pale yellow sunflower in one hand, and a bouquet in the others--the figure appears gentle despite its colossal size. The artists' highly stylized approach adds an almost vintage touch. The drawing is complimented by a simple white frame, and a sturdy wire across the back provides for instant, professional-quality hanging. About "Madame Lulu's Book of Fate": Kahn & Selesnick’s latest project “Madame Lulu’s Book of Fate” continues the adventures of the Truppe Fledermaus, a cabaret troupe of anxious mummers and would-be mystics who catalogue their absurdist attempts to augur a future that seems increasingly in peril due to environmental pressures and global turmoil. In this body of work, the artists also examine the notion of the carnivalesque - traditionally the carnival was a time when the normal order of society was upended and reversed, so that at least for a day the fool might become king, the sinner a priest, men and women might cross dress, and sacred ceremonies and normal mores are burlesqued and spoofed. During such brief times of anarchy, societal pressures were relieved by revealing their somewhat absurd and arbitrary natures. Costumes and masks were traditionally worn so that all people might have the same social status during the duration of the festival. The Truppe ask you to consider: is it the carnival that is upside-down, or perhaps the real world that it purports to burlesque? About Kahn & Selesnick: The ultimate storytellers, who have been showing with Carrie Haddad Gallery for more than 20 years, are Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick of Kahn & Selesnick, who met at Washington University in St. Louis in the 1970’s. Their initial collaboration started in Truro, MA with real film and a box camera, (that belonged to Kahn's father and was actually used during the war), a real darkroom, stacks of cotton rag paper, and a xerox machine set on sepia tone. The first few series documented an invented history about “The Royal Excavation Corps” and their experiences with a shaman, experimental wings for solo flying, psychedelic honey and all sorts of adventures shot like an old movie. Eight series later, Kahn & Selesnick now shoot with digital cameras and alter them on the computer. The results are stunning and still have the appearance of an era long ago. One of their most interesting series, Truppe Fledermaus (Bat Troupe), explores magic realism and documents a group a performers dressed as bats, “greenmen” and “death dancers” who wander the countryside performing only for animals. There are many hand-made elements in Kahn & Selesnick's work—imaginative costumes, stage sets, carved clay bat heads and figures, as well as drawings.

In this illustration, a humble wagon, humorously dubbed a "chariot", is transporting an assortment of theatrical props and trunks. A close look will reveal yet another curiosity: a pair of bare feet supporting and propelling the chariot. A subdued palette of sienna, beige, rose and umber unifies the composition, and the artists' highly stylized approach adds an almost vintage...

Treesong (Contemporary, Realist Charcoal Landscape Drawing by Sue Bryan)
By Sue Bryan
Located in Hudson, NY
Treesong (Contemporary, Realist Charcoal Landscape Drawing by Sue Bryan) 18 x 24 x 2 inches Charcoal and acrylic on Primed Arches Paper Mounted on Wood Panel Excellent condition, Ready to hang as is This contemporary charcoal landscape drawing on arches paper was completed in 2021 by Sue Bryan. Born in Ireland, the artist uses landscapes from her childhood as inspiration for her current work primarily consisting of beautifully detailed charcoal drawings of trees and wooded landscapes. The artist captures exquisite detail and luminous light with the mere use of black and white charcoal and carbon pencil. The artist creates this tree through a blend of light and shadow that demonstrates the artist's masterful technique. Dark leaves and winding branches in black charcoal contrast elegantly against a light filled sky. There is sturdy wire installed on the back for easy hanging. Artist Statement: "My work is drawing based. As a native of Ireland, the landscape there has certainly shaped and influenced my own history. Many of my drawings are of places that have a deep personal association for me; an endeavor perhaps to stay connected to my roots. My aim is not only to convey a sense of place and belonging, but also an attempt to capture the ineffable, to evoke a feeling or a memory, to invite the viewer to look beyond and beneath what they see. My process is one of building up tones and textures using a combination of charcoal, carbon and graphite, all of which yield a wonderful range of blacks and grays that vary in density and transparency as much as in tonality. Much of drawing’s appeal to me lies in its very constraint, in its simplification, in the reduction of nature’s macrocosm to the coal-black char of organic matter. For me, the act of drawing is an end in itself." About the work: A native of Ireland, Sue Bryan explores the memories of youth rooted in her homeland's landscape. Employing charcoal on both paper and panel, these moody and misty studies reminds us that the water-locked terrain is not always sunny and green. Exquisite detail found in each tree branch or mass of tall grasses lining the horizon dominates the foreground. Light emulates from the background attempting to penetrate the density of opaque cloud cover. Bryan's small scale drawings convey an intimate and highly personal sense of place and belonging. Duchándome en Cuerpo Ajeno. Nude watercolor on paper
By Celso José Castro Daza
Located in Miami Beach, FL
Duchándome en Cuerpo Ajeno, May 29th, 2018 by Celso Castro-Daza From the Duchándome Series Watercolor and ink on an archival paper Image size: 19.5 in. H x 13.75 in. W Unframed ____________ Undefined by medium, Celso Castro’s works each carry the presence of the artist’s hand through the transparency of their process. Castro’s oeuvre is strongly divided between his photomontage assemblies and watercolor paintings: the prior is marked by the labor-intensive deconstruction of portrait photographs and the latter, by the seemingly frenzied recreation of a past encounter rendered in the drips and scribbles of paint and ink. Both discriminating in what they reveal of the subject, his photomontage and watercolor portraits exude raw sexuality through the combination of Castro’s mark-making and gaze. Celso Castro’s work is a bare-bulb erotic photo...

"TRANSFIGURATION", abstract watercolor, landscape, trees, water, green, blue sky
By Fleur Thesmar
Located in Toronto, Ontario
TRANSFIGURATION is a new watercolor on Fabriano paper by Fleur Thesmar. The artwork measures 30x22", and is a structured composition in tones of green, blue, umber, rose and teal. Bordering on abstraction and figuration, a landscape of trees and water and sky appears to open up symmetrically, possibly revealing a spirit. From Fleur Thesmar – "Inspired by a mathematical model, I painted this abstraction which slowly took on the form of a person. The shivering brushstrokes create a textured relief, while the person seems to emerge from and recede into the background." Having moved her family from France to America, artist Fleur Thesmar closely observed the changes in her world – from the seemingly obvious such as surrounding landscapes, the light of day and weather, the flowers, trees and shorelines – to the smaller less obvious shifts, such as how one behaves in a new world, in a new home, how one cherishes certain belongings and certain memories. Her artistic practice is borne out of that close observation and shift in perspective, and has led to a number of successful gallery shows in the U.S. and internationally. Fleur Thesmar has shown at Beacon Gallery in Boston MA, 440 Gallery, Brooklyn NY, Old West Museum, Cheyenne WY, Belmont Art Gallery, Belmont MA...
