About the Item

This Rural Scene Mural Study by Samuel Greenburg is scored in a manner indicating transfer to a larger format. However as yet no related image or mural is known to me. Dimensions are for the sheet. On the reverse is a pencil notation reading ‘From the Estate of Samuel Greenburg, Leah Greenburg.’ Ukrainian-born Greenburg (1905-1980) taught art in the Chicago Public School system. There are two linocuts in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. In 1942 he was awarded first prize for a war poster at the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a member of the Renaissance Society and Chicago Society of Arts, and was a founder of the American Jewish Artists Club.
