About the Item
The artist who made Company Party. (Male French WWII Soldiers with Kepis and Dancing), about 1939, is unknown. It could be J. B. Dolitro, but that's just a guess and a deep Google search didn't turn up anything useful.
But this ink drawing was clearly made by a skilled draftsman. Male, probably, as it's such an intimate male interior space. The distinctive hat, the French 'kepi,' was mostly dropped by the French army after 1940 except for officers and/or ceremonial purposes. Drinking and cigar smoking perhaps date to an earlier decade, but sometimes these things transcend time and space.
It is signed in pencil (sadly indecipherable), and titled on the reverse. Also on the reverse is an annotation 'No. 9, p. 11.' This could indicate it was used for a publication of some kind -- page 11? Any thoughts on this would be hugely appreciated.
Company Party give us the immediacy of being in the room at the time, but also of being quickly drawn while carefully composed and detailed. For a sheet that is 5 x 8 inches, it packs a wallop.
