Vincent Smith (American, 1929-2003) was a Brooklyn native known for his creation of expressive, abstract figures, and emotive, patterned backgrounds which often reveal the gritty reality of life in New York. At other times his work can be a playful celebration of the energy, music, and people of the communities in which he lived and reveled.
Although Smith showed an affinity for art and music from a young age, he spent time working on the railroad and serving in the army in the south before, while working for the postal service in New York at age 22 in 1952, he was so moved by the Cezanne exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art that he decided to resign and become a professional artist.
In the following years Smith would study at the Art Students League (1953), the Skowhegan School of Art and Painting (1955), and the Brooklyn Museum Art School (1953/56). Throughout the 1950s he became deeply engrossed in the bohemian jazz and art world, painting scenes of the neighborhoods, jazz clubs, and pool halls where he spent his time.
In the 1960s Smith became involved with the Civil Rights Movement, and the content of his work shifted towards social commentary, reflecting the suffering and strength he witnessed in the fight for equality. In 1967, he began experimenting with elements of collage and other mixed-media in his painting, mixing sand into his paint to invoke specific textures. From his early career Smith was interested in the study of African history and culture, and in the 1970s he was able to travel extensively in West Africa and hold several exhibitions of his work there.
As an artist, teacher, and informed student of art history, Smith’s work reflects an awareness of the white-washed art-historical narrative; this he attempted to change, by expressing the dynamic reality of life in Black communities in New York and beyond. Smith died in 2003 at the age of 75.

The Philadelphia modernist Arthur B. Carles was a brilliant colorist and an extraordinarily innovative painter. Though Carles trained initially at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, soaking up the more conservative teaching of William Merritt Chase and Thomas Anshutz, he was deeply influenced by the avant-garde art scene in Paris during his first trip there in 1905. In 1907, Carles won the prestigious Cresson Traveling Scholarship, which enabled him to return to Paris for several more years. This experience had a profound impact on Carles as an artist; he was extremely affected by modern French painting, especially the work of Cezanne and Matisse, and by the time Carles returned home to Philadelphia in 1912, he was a confirmed modernist.
This small landscape sketch was probably painted early during Carles's career, and yet, it already reveals his strong interest in abstraction. Indeed, Landscape Abstraction demonstrates both his daring exploration of lyrical color harmonies as well as his interest in two-dimensional surface design. Painted loosely in the spontaneous medium of watercolor, Carles used thin washes and delicate pools of paint to suggest the foreground area and surrounding trees. His color palette is rich and expressive, ranging from pale greens and blues to deep red, yellow, and even purple.
In addition to his remarkable career as an artist, Carles was also an incredibly gifted teacher. He taught at PAFA from 1917 to 1925 and had a very deep impact on a number of his students such as Morris Blackburn, Quita Brodhead, and Jane Piper...

About the artist.
Clivette was born in Portage, Wisconsin, in 1868 as Merton Clive Cook, the youngest of five (four sons and one daughter). His father was a retired British sea captain, and his mother was an American of French, Scottish and Iroquois Indian stock.
He stayed with a circus for about five years, traveling all over the Western United States, Canada and Mexico. They did shows for the army forts, for railroad workers and on Indian Reservations.
Clivette settled in San Francisco in 1886, when he was offered a job as a reporter and theatrical writer for the San Francisco Call. He met Frederic Remington during this period. He was the first serious artist Clivette had met and he was an inspiration to him.
Clivette had done some drawing and painting on the road during his vaudeville years, he had a natural facility for it, and he had had some formal art training as well. He had had some training in Europe and was aware of the modern art movement in Europe. Later in New York he participated in symposiums and workshops at the Art Students League. Around 1910 he gave up his stage career and began to paint full time. He was about 40 years old and was to continue to paint vigorously and prolifically for the remaining 22 years of his life, His style can be identified with the Expressionist Movement, His subjects include portraits (some quite realistic, others more generalized) Indians and horsemen, laborers, gentlemen and vamps, jungle animals and birds, fish, seascapes and landscapes.
He was an active participant in the art world of New York. He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. In 1923 he showed at the Ainslee Art Gallery at 677 Fifth Ave., in 1925 at the Spanish Society in Brooklyn and in 1927 he had a solo show at the New Gallery, 600 Madison Ave. That same year there was also a solo show of his work in Paris at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery, which included a catalogue. In 1929 he exhibited at the Art Center of the Roerich Museum in a group show of work from the collection of George Hellman. In 1930 he was in a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, "Painting and Sculpture by Living Americans" which also included the work of Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, William Glackens, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, George Luks and Mark Tobey and sculptors Gaston Lachaise and William Zorach among others. A description and critical analysis of his work in included in the book by Henry Rankin Poore...
