About the Item
A vivid rendering of a a joyous village festivity, a painted watercolor by Walter Goodall, signed and dated 1862. In the foreground, a young girl in a white dress dances with a younger man—her red hat held aloft—surrounded by villagers singing, playing instruments, drinking, and feasting. To the right, a young mother sits turned away from us, her child in her lap, watching another couple dancing further back. The scene exudes warmth, camaraderie, and the simple pleasures of country life. The scene probably taken from one of Goodalls trips to Italy.
Walter Goodall (1830 – 1889) was a noted English watercolor artist, the youngest son of engraver Edward Goodall and brother of painters Frederick and Edward Angelo Goodall. He received his training at Somerset House’s School of Design and the Royal Academy Schools
Goodall emerged as a promising talent early on, exhibiting three drawings at the Royal Academy in 1852. He joined the Society of Painters in Water‑Colours as an associate in 1853 and became a full member in 1862 which is the same year as our watercolor is dated. He was a regular contributor to exhibitions in Pall Mall and at the Royal Manchester Institution, where his works—especially those displayed in 1861—earned high praise.
In 1876, his watercolor Lottery Ticket was shown at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition.
Goodall specialized in charming small-scale genre scenes—domestic life, peasants, children, animals, and coastal landscapes. A popular select of his rural sketches was published as lithographs titled Walter Goodall’s Rustic Sketches. He also produced drawings after works in the Vernon Gallery, which were engraved in The Art Journal.
Goodall traveled extensively across Europe—visiting Rome, Venice, Holland, Brittany, and the Pyrenees—often depicting local people and scenes in his work
Exhibition records, such as for the Philadelphia Centennial and Manchester shows, underline his active participation in the artistic community
Walter Goodall holds a valued place among Victorian watercolorists. His paintings exude intimacy, cheerful domesticity, and evocative rural scenes. They were well‑received in his time, regularly showcased in major exhibitions and art prints. Today, his work survives in public collections like the Victoria & Albert Museum and other museum and other institutions, retaining the charm and narrative detail dear to genre painting enthusiasts.
