About the Item

This pastel drawing on paper is made by Dutch Artist Willy Sluiter (1873-1949). The drawing is framed in an original and gilded frame from the famous 'Paul Gering Frames' in Amsterdam. The glass is 'Clarity Museum glass' it protects against reflecting but also against UV-Light. Framed sizes are: 102 x 77 cm. Of course the original frame is included in the prize. About the artist Willy Sluiter: Is well known as a versatile artist, famous because of his drawings after life. The drawing will be shipped worldwide for free in a custom made wooden crate. (see last picture) A short biography: J.W. (Willy) Shutter Painter Jan Willem Sluiter was born in Amersfoort on May 24, 1873. Willy Sluiter died in The Hague on May 22, 1949. He was a (political) draftsman, watercolorist, graphic artist, illustrator, lithographer, designer, pastelist and painter. Wallpaper Willy Shutter Willy Sluiter grew up in Amersfoort until 1878, in Nijehaske (Heereveen) until 1883 and then in Zwijndrecht until 1890. Willy was a son of Jan Willem Sluiter (1839-1902) and Johanna Hillegonda Cornelia Suermondt (1846-1931). His father was a notary and amateur draftsman. Willy's drawing talent was stimulated at a young age. The exceptional drawing talent was discovered by painter Bernard Blommers (1845-1915). Bernard Blommers advised him to go to the Rotterdam art academy. Academic education In 1891 Willy moved to Rotterdam and became a student at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts until 1894. His teacher at the academy was the Brussels painter Alexander Henri Robert van Maasdijk (1856-1931). From 1893 he became a member of the Pictura Drawing Society in Dordrecht. Willy Sluiter will then attend classes at the Hague Academy of Visual Arts. In The Hague (Scheveningen) he rents a studio on the Kanaalweg and in 1896 becomes a member of the Pulchri Studio. In 1896 Willy moved to his former hometown of Zwijndrecht. He continues to live here until 1899. During this period he has his studio in nearby Dordrecht, above the Blauwpoort. Katwijk by the sea Willy Sluiter buys a piece of land in Katwijk aan Zee in 1899, on which he has a house built. In that year he also travels through Europe (France, Germany, Italy) visiting Paris and the Louvre. He then married Agatha Anna Louise van Nievervaart (1874-1957) in 1901 and settled in Katwijk. From this marriage daughter Johanna Adriana Sluiter (1902-1991) was born. Willy Sluiter painted many beach and seascapes in Katwijk with barges, shell fishermen and the fishermen. These subjects are in line with the Hague School, but his palette is lighter and more colorful and shows many human activities. In addition, Willy was very active in the cultural life in Katwijk. With other painters living there, such as Jan Toorop (1858-1928) and Gerhard Morgenstjerne Munthe (1875-1927), he organized exhibitions of paintings. In Katwijk he also met the painter Hans von Bartels (1856-1913), from which a friendship developed. From 1906 Willy joined the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij in The Hague. Laren and The Hague Around 1910 he moved with his family to Laren (North Holland). He also plays a prominent role in cultural life there. From Laren, Sluiter regularly visits the fishing villages of Edam and Volendam. Willy Sluiter was a welcome guest at Hotel Spaander in Volendam, where artists from the Netherlands and abroad stayed. He painted at fairs and parties, thereby capturing the local in traditional costume. A well-known model is Hille Butter from Volendam, whom he would portray several times. The family then left for The Hague in 1916. Willy Sluiter is now an established artist and a well-known illustrator of books, posters and calendars. He is a sought-after portraitist and likes to be in the well-to-do circles in The Hague. He also portrays members of the Dutch royal family several times. In addition, he frequently records the mundane life along the Scheveningen coast. subjects Willy Sluiter's oeuvre consists of: animal depictions (genre), figure depictions, genre depictions, history (as a genre), caricatures, landscapes (as a genre), portraits, cityscapes, still lifes, beach views and fishing genre. In addition to Dutch associations, Willy Sluiter also becomes a member of the Pastel Society London and the Society of American Illustrators. He has won many awards, including silver medals from Amsterdam and St. Louis (United States).
