About the Item

Cliffs, backwash (Pointe du Grouin #23.04) is an India ink and salt on paper drawing by the French contemporary artist Yann Bagot, dimensions are 75.8 × 56 cm (29.8 × 22 in). The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. This body of work was initiated during an artist residency in 2023 at the Sémaphore de la Pointe du Grouin—a protected natural site located in Cancale, Brittany, France. Immersed in this rugged coastal environment, Yann Bagot drew inspiration from the elemental forces that shape and confront each other in the seascape: the relentless waves, ocean spray, the biting salt wind, and the enduring presence of rock battered by foam. “The wind picks up. From the cliffs of the Pointe du Grouin, facing the ocean, my gaze dips below the dark horizon. Below, the rock, sea and air simmer. Each element seems to become the other. In the white foam, the black rock becomes volatile and fleeting. Shielded from our gaze, it softens its slopes over a long time. Unperturbed, the wave bursts and crashes. In every spray, everywhere, the air intrudes, circulates, acts and transforms. Where does each element begin and end?” – Yann Bagot A French contemporary artist, Yann Bagot explores the dynamics of natural forces and the transformations they provoke within the landscape. His monochromatic drawings—created using India ink, water, and salt—express a close dialogue with nature. Salt interacts with the ink, concentrating and distorting it to generate textures that are both intentional and unpredictably organic. Often working in the field, Bagot immerses himself in remote environments—forests, coastlines, and wildernesses—where he seeks to capture the living presence of nature as it unfolds in real time. His process is rooted in direct observation and sensory engagement with the landscape, striving to translate the immediacy and essence of a place onto paper. At the heart of his practice is a reverence for wonder and the spontaneity of discovery: “It’s the flash of the first appearance that interests me, the power of the very first moment, when you open your eyes to a magnificent, unexpected space.” – Yann Bagot
