About the Item

Watercolour with a captivating motif from Pompeii, with Mount Vesuvius just visible in the background and, in the foreground, an interior view from the Casa di Marco Olconio, Pompeii. Signed and dated "C. Grundström 1919" and "Pompeji Casa di Olconio" Claes Grundström (1844–1925) was a Swedish painter, draftsman and architect known for his sensitive watercolors and detailed architectural studies. Born in 1844 in Sweden, he lived during a time when classical education and the study of antiquity were highly valued among European artists. Grundström showed an early talent for capturing light, form, and historical architecture, and he often sought out motifs with strong historical resonance. He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm and was a member and professor there from 1883-1912. After his studies, he traveled throughout Europe, as was common for artists of his generation, in search of inspiration and classical subjects. Italy, the ancient ruins of Pompeii, became among many other sites a source of material for him. His 1918 painting of the Casa di Marco Olconio is an example of this interest—with the preserved beauty of an ancient Roman archeological interior. Grundström’s works are represented in several Swedish museum collections, including the National museum in Stockholm and regional museums. Due to the historical and educational value of his art, his works may also be found in university collections and cultural heritage institutions. Casa di Marco Olconio (House of Marcus Olconius) The Casa di Marco Olconio, or House of Marcus Olconius, is an ancient Roman house located in the archaeological site of Pompeii, Italy. Named after Marcus Olconius, a member of a prominent local family, the house reflects the wealth and status of its owner through its elegant layout and decorative elements. Like many elite houses in Pompeii, it features an atrium (a central open-air courtyard), a peristyle garden, and several well-preserved frescoes and mosaics. The architectural style combines functional living spaces with artistic beauty, showcasing the Roman taste for luxury and order. The Olconius family was influential in Pompeii’s political and social life, and the house may have served not only as a residence but also as a place for conducting business and entertaining guests. The structure provides valuable insight into Roman domestic life before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Today, the Casa di Marco Olconio stands as a testament to the sophistication of Roman urban housing and remains a point of interest for archaeologists and visitors alike. Grundström’s painting captures the timeless atmosphere of this house. A Brief History of Pompeii Pompeii was an ancient Roman city located near modern-day Naples in southern Italy. It was founded in the 7th or 6th century BCE by the Oscans and later became a thriving Roman colony. Pompeii reached its cultural and economic height in the 1st century CE, with lavish villas, public baths, forums, and a busy harbor. However, the city met a tragic end in 79 CE, when Mount Vesuvius erupted violently, covering Pompeii and nearby towns in volcanic ash and pumice. The city was buried and forgotten for over 1,500 years until its rediscovery in the 18th century. Excavations have since revealed an unparalleled snapshot of Roman life, with homes, frescoes, shops, and everyday items remarkably preserved. Pompeii continues to fascinate archaeologists, historians, and artists alike—as reflected in Claes Grundström’s evocative painting from 1919.

Positano

Ink and watercolor drawing by Carl Palme, dated 1921 and signed "CP," captures the narrow alleys of Positano. According to a note on the reverse, it is a study for an oil painting measuring 70x60 cm. Works from the early 20th century by Carl Palme are rare, making this piece particularly significant. Drawing 20x24cm. With frame 34x36cm Carl Adolf Palme (1879 – 1960) was a Swedish painter, draftsman, printmaker, and author. Born in Stockholm to bank director Henrik Palme and Anna Lavonius, he grew up on the Svalnäs estate, which is now a guest home and senior residence. Palme's artistic education began in London at the Slade School of Fine Art (1900–1901). He then studied at Wassily Kandinsky's art school in Munich from 1902 to 1904. In 1907, he moved to Paris and became the first Swedish student of Henri Matisse. Palme was instrumental in founding the Académie Matisse, a collective of young Swedish and Norwegian artists who rented a large studio in Paris. Matisse visited weekly to critique their work. This group included notable artists such as Isaac Grünewald, Sigrid Hjertén, and Einar Jolin...
