Yellow houses bask in the soft light of spring, their warm tones contrasting with the cool shades of trees and shadows on the ground. A lone figure walks along the quiet street, and power lines crisscross the sky, adding a hint of life to the scene. The artwork is part of artist Judy Mudd's Cityscape series.
About the Artist
Artist Judy Mudd paints vibrant watercolor scenes, often depicting barns and the countryside. "It's more than just painting a subject; it's about expressing a feeling," says Judy. Her chosen medium presents a challenge with its spontaneous movement, use of gravity, and drying stages, which she finds both fascinating and thrilling. Judy enjoys incorporating mystery and detail into her compositions, striving not to reveal everything and allowing the viewer to interpret her works. Raised in an artistic family, Judy learned drawing from her mother, shaping her lifelong passion for the craft. Her family tradition of artistry traces back to 1619 through her ancestor, Otto Marseus van Schrieck, a renowned oil painter in Amsterdam. Judy's creative process begins with gathering reference material during excursions, where she sketches and photographs various scenes. She operates from her primary studio in the spacious basement of her home, along with a mobile setup for outdoor or classroom sessions. Beyond her practice, Judy conducts painting workshops and classes, watches sports, and enjoys dining out with her family.

Judy Mudd
Judy Mudd, creating a work of art means much more than simply reproducing something she sees. “It is more than painting a subject, it is expressing a feeling,” she explains. Mudd develops her paintings with thorough reconnaissance work. She goes out on photo shoots in a variety of atmospheric conditions, sketches outdoors, takes notes and completes color and values studies. From there, back in the studio, she lets the paintbrush guide her. Outside of painting, Mudd also leads watercolor workshops and runs a real estate business with her husband.

Artist Maurice Dionne illustrates a glimpse of O'Connor Street in Ottawa. He draws inspiration from the quality of light and the steeple, evident in the background. The light, the cars, and all the reflections create dynamic movement in the scene. "In sketching, I left a lot of impressionistic areas to catch your imagination," says Maurice.
About the Artist
Artist Maurice Dionne paints watercolor scenes of Ottawa, from quiet city walks to charming Victorian homes. "The transparency of the medium is truly remarkable; it allows so much light to shine through," says Maurice. He devotedly captures the mood and vibrancy most often inspired by the people around him. He finished a degree in science but ultimately decided to embrace his true freedom of expression. Now a full-time artist, he commits to a home studio as his haven of creativity, where he has access to artist-grade material that ensures that his pieces will be archival and endure the test of time. Maurice's work received merits from The Marketer Art Competition in 2020 and 2021 and was featured in the Electric Street Gallery, Ottawa Art Gallery, and Art Gallery of Ontario. He relishes cycling, hiking, kayaking, reading, and visiting specialty coffee shops with his spouse in his spare time.

"This painting is a closer-up version of an earlier work called French Laundry," shares artist Catherine McCargar. She uses the same technique of priming the watercolor paper with a layer of gesso as the first painting. The process gives more fluidity to the paint, enabling her to execute wet-on-wet and to move it around as she sees fit. Catherine achieves a truly impressionistic painting with contrasting soft and hard edges that keep the viewer engaged.
