About the Item

We are thrilled to present a watercolor by the Swedish artist Olle Hjortzberg. This small yet exquisite piece, painted in 1917, portrays a solitary yellow rose in vibrant, delicate strokes. One thing that sets this watercolor apart is that it is painted on an envelope, addressed to Erikbergsgatan 25 in Stockholm. Hjortzberg’s skillful use of watercolors brings the yellow rose to life with its soft petals and lush green leaves. The transparency and fluidity of the medium are harnessed beautifully, capturing the delicate essence of the flower. About Olle Hjortzberg Olle Hjortzberg (1872–1959) was a prolific and influential Swedish artist, celebrated for his versatility across various forms of art, including painting, illustration, and design. Born to engineer Arvid Hjortzberg and Maria Henriette Lyon, he grew up in an environment rich in both technical and artistic influences. His early education took place in Linköping, but his artistic journey truly began when he moved to Stockholm in 1886. There, he initially worked on ornamental designs under the guidance of his brother-in-law, the illustrator Agi Lindegren. Hjortzberg's formal artistic education was at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, where he studied from 1892 to 1897. His early career was marked by contributions to the decoration of Uppsala Cathedral. Throughout his life, Hjortzberg traveled extensively across Europe and the Middle East, absorbing diverse artistic traditions and techniques. These travels deeply influenced his work, particularly his frescoes and large-scale murals. Back in Sweden, Hjortzberg’s notable contributions include a series of 28 paintings in Klara Church, murals in the Dramatic Theatre's restaurant, and decorative compositions in several prominent buildings in Stockholm. Hjortzberg’s murals often showcased a combination of classical influences and a modernist approach, characterized by his use of al secco technique and stylized figures. Hjortzberg’s work is well-represented in several prestigious institutions. His art can be found in: Göteborgs Konstmuseum Nationalmuseum in Stockholm Uppsala University Library Kalmar Konstmuseum Moderna Museet in Stockholm Norrköpings Konstmuseum Röhsska Museet in Gothenburg info: watercolor painted on a envelope indistinctly signed with monogram unframed 18.5 x 12.5 cm (7.28 x 4.92 inches) framed 34.5 x 29 cm (13.58 x 11.42 inches)
