Robert Freiman was a New York-based painter who favored watercolor and ink compositions. From early childhood, he was fascinated by drawing. Born deaf, Freiman attended the Wright Oral School and Lexington School for the Deaf before pursuing art studies at the National Academy of Design (with Robert Brackman and Wayman Adams), Pratt Institute, Art Students League and Parsons School of Design. Through diligent study, Freiman learned to speak not only English, but also French. His early acquisition of speech, as well as a keen ability to read lips, allowed Freiman to lead a remarkably full life as a successful professional artist. He also studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts where he won the French Republic First Prize at Fontainebleau in 1950. Although adept at portraying interiors, he was best known for portraiture and depicting figures in motion, such as acrobats, cyclists, dancers and athletes. Early in his career, Freiman’s paintings were realistic, but he later adopted a more abstract and surreal style, particularly metaphysical landscapes filled with mystical towers and other structures. Freiman exhibited at the New Britain Museum of American Art, Mint Museum (Charlotte), Columbia Museum of Art (South Carolina), Bruce Museum (Connecticut), Doll & Richards Gallery (Boston), the Newport Art Association, and Roerich Gallery (New York). Freiman’s works are in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, New Britain Museum of American Art, and the Farnsworth Art Museum and he was a member of the American Watercolor Society.

Robert Freiman
Robert Freiman, deaf from birth, was born in March 1917 in New York City. He attended an oral program near his home and later transferred to the Lexington School for the Deaf when he was six. Early in his childhood, his love for drawing, painting, and studying became apparent and as an adult, he continued his studies in New York at the National Academy of Design, Pratt Institute, the Art Students League and the Parsons School of Design. In Paris, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Freiman was focused on painting portraits and figures in motion in various mediums, especially the mixed-media combination of watercolor, acrylic and pen. Among his subjects were acrobats, ballet dancers, cyclists and other athletes. He was also focused on abstracts for a time, discovering new media in his works with quick brushwork and expressive movements.

About the Painting
Refreshment and Intermission is part of a series of paintings of Amish subjects Grooms started in 1938 based on his travels in Pennsylvania. These tempera works reflect the Regionalist impulse to paint local scenes far away from big cities. Focusing on both people and landscape, Grooms' compositions tell the stories of the uniquely American experience of the Amish. “Grooms paints the Amish people with as much understanding of type and appreciation of the plastic quality as any artist who has approached this challenging subject," noted the art critic for The Cincinnati Inquirer when reviewing Grooms' solo exhibition at Closson' Gallery, "In his current show, ‘Refreshment and Intermission,’ is a case in point.
