Worship at Ebony has taken place for some one thousand years but St Mary the Virgin Church, as it exists today, was not built until 1858. A church had previously existed on the island of Ebony where, standing 30 metres above sea level and visible for miles around, it provided a prominent landmark to ships coming up the sea creek. This church, however, was devastated by a fire in the 16th century, and from its ruins, a much smaller church, built in a simple rectangle of Kentish ragstone, was erected, serving the parish until 1858. In this year, the church was taken down, stone by stone, and moved to the nearby hamlet of Reading Street where it stands today. Gray’s design centres on the Anunciation, featuring the figures of Mary and Gabriel, and was installed in the church in 1984.
Jane Gray A.R.C.A. (b.1931) is a British stained glass artist. She studied stained glass at the Kingston School of Arts (1949-51) and later at the Royal College of Art (1951-55) under Lawrence Lee. Lee was so impressed with Gray’s work that he asked her to work alongside him on the design of ten nave windows for Coventry Cathedral. This six-year-long design project culminated in their final installation in 1962 after the cathedral’s consecration. Gray was the first woman to become a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and has designed more than a hundred windows in private and public buildings, chapels and over forty churches across the country, including St Peter’s, Martindale, Shrewsbury Abbey, St Oswald, Oswestry and St Mary, Chirk. Gray’s designs mark a crucial turning point in the history of stained glass art as the Victorian style gave way to a modern, aesthetic. In her work, Gray navigates this shift with a style that, whilst distinctly modern, retains a deep rooted sense of the medieval. Despite many of her commissions being for church windows, stained glass design was not simply about religious depiction for Gray, but more about ‘colour, shapes, luminosity, [and] playing with rainbows’.

Stained Glass Design 'Ave Maria'
Watercolour
8 x 7 cm

Provenance: the artist's studio sale
A rare example of Gray’s early work, this design shows a more traditional approach to stained glass window design, something that Gray came to eschew in favour of a more modern style in much of her later work. It’s intended location is unknown.

Large 19th Century Ecclesiastical Stained Glass Window
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
A large antique late 19th century Ecclesiastical style stained glass window signed by Ward & Hughes, London, 1890. This window is of excellent artistry, with each tiny detail hand painted by a late 19th century artist.
The stained glass depicts a religious scene, thought to be Joseph being visited by one of the Lord’s angels in a dream. The angel told Joseph to not be afraid and take Mary home as his wife, because what was conceived in her was from the Holy Spirit. The angel said they will call their son Jesus because he was to save his people from their sins.
A piece of art showcasing such religious meaning, only deserves to be pride of place inside a home or property - perhaps even a new addition to a church or chapel.
Ward & Hughes, London
