Contemporary abstract expressionist pastel on paper of a Provençal landscape 'Cancan b' by Dutch artist Bernadette Van Baarsen. Signed and dated to the bottom right and presented in black frame. The painting comes with a certificate of authenticity from the artist.
One of a new series of exciting, colourful, innovative and expressive works offering views of the landscape of Provence. Bernadette has taken and amplified the beautiful light in this wonderful part of the world breaking it down into its myriad components resulting in an explosion of colour. This is Provence in the intense light of mid summer. From the wild, rocky "garrigue" in the foreground a winding, climbing road leads the eye through the centre of the painting passing an olive and a grouping of cypress trees grove finishing at an azur blue sky. The colour is as intense as the summer heat. Strong yet simple abstracted shapes allow the colour to reign.
This artwork is a striking landscape painting, combining bold colors and abstract forms to convey a vibrant scene. Dominated by rich blues and greens, the central focus is a stylized valley, framed by rugged, swirling rock formations in earthy tones. The background features a serene blue landscape that hints at a vast mountain range, contrasting sharply with the warm hues of the foreground. The fluidity of the brushstrokes creates a sense of movement, leading the viewer's eye through the winding pathway into the composition. This piece stands out due to its dynamic use of color and form, evoking emotion and intrigue. It offers an abstract interpretation of natural elements, blending realism with imagination, and invites viewers to explore its hidden depths within the layered textures and harmonious contrasts.
Bernadette ('Berna', as she autographs her works) VAN BAARSEN was born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After finishing her high-school she followed training to be a nurse and architect, whilst at the same time being a lead singer in two Dutch punk bands and making sculptures in plexiglass. Later in life she decided to pursue an academic career and obtained a PhD in psychology and medical ethics. She worked as associate professor at the Free University of Amsterdam and was member of several high-level medical-ethical committees. In 2015 she settled in France. Being essentially autodidact, she took up painting, in particular after being inspired by the Provençal landscape and friendships with fellow artists. In recent years she has shown her work at successful exhibitions in Provence and elsewhere.
