Queen's College in all its leafy glory. The dreaming spires of the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, the Radcliffe Camera, and All Souls peek over the quad.
Bernard Cecil Gotch was a Winchester-born artist who is best known for his atmospheric watercolours of Britain's towns and cities (most notably Oxford).
He moved to Oxford in 1927, painting many watercolours of the interiors and exteriors of Oxford’s many buildings. His works concentrate on the grand exteriors and interiors of the University's colleges, and he exhibited frequently - including an exhibition every term at Oriel College.
His first notable commission was for the publisher Methuen, illustrating 'A Shepherd’s Life' by W H Hudson. Whilst in London he was invited to illustrate a book on the Public Schools of England (which was sadly never completed). He exhibited watercolours at the Fine Art Society and Lincolns Inn, and also exhibited at the Royal Academy.
In 1952 Gotch was given an Honorary MA by the University of Oxford, and, after his death in 1963, a memorial was held for him at Oriel.

Bernard Cecil Gotch
Bernard Cecil Gotch was born on 17th May 1876 at Chilcombe near Winchester. Gotch studied and then taught at Winchester School of Art. Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century, he took a studio in London near the Tate. Specializing in architectural views, he had one-man shows at the Fine Art Society and Lincoln's Inn and also exhibited at the Royal Academy. His first notable commission was for the publisher Methuen, illustrating A Shepherd’s Life by W H Hudson. While in London, he was invited to illustrate a book on the Public Schools of England, which sadly was never completed but his completed watercolors were exhibited at the Fine Art Society in 1927. He lived in 1927 in Oxford, living on Cumnor Hill. From his studio on the first floor he painted commissions, making many watercolors of the interiors and exteriors of Oxford’s many buildings. He also exhibited at one-man shows, most notably in every Eights Week at Oriel College. Bernard Cecil Gotch died in 1963.

Oriel Square in the afternoon. Two undergraduates lean against the walls of Oriel College, talking, and another group make their way inside. Vintage cars (dating the picture to the 1920s, or 1930s?) are parked outside its gates, and the Oriel flag flies high.

This artwork "Oxford Cityscape #1" 1972 is a watercolor by noted architectural British artist, Ken Messer 1931-2017. It is signed and dated at the lower right corner by the artist. About the artist.
After attending City of Oxford High School for Boys, where he excelled at rugby and cricket, he started work as an accountant in the city.
He then moved on to become a steward for the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). In the 1960’s Mr Messer was involved in a car accident which would end his sporting career and change his working life.
When he left his job with BOAC he became a graphic designer at Pergamon Press, owned by Robert Maxwell, which allowed him time to pursue his real passion which was painting watercolours.
He rose through the ranks at Pergamon to become studio manager and when he could progress no further he decided to become a full time artist, a role from which he never retired.
He quickly became well-known for his paintings of Oxford...
