About the Item

This stunning mixed-media painting by German-American artist Bert Van Bork (1928–2014), titled Walpi #9 (Hopi Village on First Mesa, Arizona), is a vibrant tribute to the beauty and culture of the American Southwest. Executed in watercolor, ink, and charcoal on paper, the piece captures the distinctive architecture and landscape of Walpi, a centuries-old Hopi village perched on First Mesa in northern Arizona. Using a bold and expressive palette of saturated pinks, blues, oranges, and purples, Van Bork transforms the scene into a dynamic composition that merges expressionism with realism. His signature use of rich color and energetic linework conveys both the stillness of the mesa and the spiritual energy of the land. The artwork is professionally mounted in a custom archival frame designed for preservation and display. Framed dimensions: 14 ½ x 17 ½ inches, image size: 9 ½ x 12 ½ inches About the Artist: Bert Van Bork Bert Van Bork was a prolific painter, printmaker, photographer, filmmaker, and documentarian, celebrated for his vivid and emotional depictions of both urban and natural environments. Born in Augustusburg, Saxony, Germany, Van Bork studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin under Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, one of the leading figures of Die Brücke, the influential German Expressionist movement. Van Bork’s early work included woodcuts, drypoint etchings, and graphic prints, often exploring themes of post-war Germany. His woodcut Witwe (Widow) was prominently featured in the 1949 Kunstamt Berlin-Mitte exhibition, earning him critical recognition. In 1954, Van Bork emigrated to the United States, settling in Chicago, where he expanded into filmmaking and art education. His documentary EYEWITNESS: The Legacy of Death Camp Art was nominated for an Academy Award in 2000. Throughout his life, Van Bork traveled extensively, developing a deep interest in Native American culture and Southwestern landscapes, which became recurring themes in his later paintings and drawings. Walpi #9 is a rare and emotionally resonant example of Southwestern modernist art, perfect for collectors of mid-century mixed-media works, Native American landscape art, or those seeking an evocative piece that bridges European expressionism and American regionalism.
