Essay:
This striking gouache by Swedish-American artist Carl Oscar Borg depicts the monumental sandstone formation known as Inscription Rock, part of El Morro National Monument in western New Mexico. Towering above the desert plain, this dramatic outcrop has served for centuries as a waypoint for travelers, who carved their names and messages into the soft rock—ranging from ancestral Puebloan petroglyphs to inscriptions by Spanish explorers and American pioneers.
Carl Oscar Borg was born in 1879 in the village of Grinstad, Dalsland, Sweden, and immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century. Settling in California, he became a celebrated painter of the American Southwest, capturing its vast landscapes and Native cultures with deep reverence and dramatic flair. Borg was closely associated with the Hopi and Navajo peoples and is often described as their "artistic interpreter."
An influential figure in the California art scene, Borg also worked as an art director during the golden age of silent film and taught at institutions including the California Art Institute and the Santa Barbara School of the Arts. His work is represented in major museum collections across the United States.
In Inscription Rock, New Mexico, Borg's sensitive handling of color and texture conveys the spiritual grandeur of the Southwestern landscape. The painting is a fine example of his enduring fascination with the land and its layered histories.

Carl Oscar Borg
Carl Oscar Borg was a Swedish-American painter, illustrator, and printmaker best known for his luminous landscapes of the American West and his sensitive portrayals of Native American life. Born in Grinstad, Dalsland, Sweden, he left home at the age of 15 to work as a house painter. His artistic talent and ambition led him to London, where he briefly worked as an assistant to the renowned portraitist Anders Zorn before sailing to America around the turn of the century. Borg arrived in California in 1901 and quickly found his artistic home in the dramatic light and landscape of the American Southwest. He became associated with the California Impressionist movement and was one of the earliest non-Indigenous artists to travel and paint extensively in Navajo and Hopi lands. His deep respect for Indigenous culture and his ability to capture the spiritual vastness of the desert made his work both artistically distinctive and historically valuable. Throughout his career, Borg worked across media—oil, watercolor, gouache, and etching—developing a bold, expressive style characterized by clarity of form, vibrant color, and masterful use of light. He was a founding member of the Painter-Etchers Society in Los Angeles and held teaching positions at the Santa Barbara School of the Arts and the University of California. His work was widely exhibited in the United States and Europe during his lifetime, and he received numerous honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. Though most associated with the American West, Borg never forgot his Scandinavian roots. A number of rare early works depict Swedish and Norwegian landscapes, painted before his emigration. Today, Carl Oscar Borg is recognized as a vital link between European academic training and the emerging modern visual identity of the American West. His legacy is preserved in major museum collections and continues to resonate with collectors and scholars alike.

"Monument Valley Arizona" - Desert Landscape
Located in Soquel, CA
Detailed watercolor of Monument Valley by Albert DeRome (American, 1885-1959). The viewer is looking out over the valley from a high vantage point, with towering mesas in the distance. In the foreground, there are some shrubs and a small tree to the right side of the composition. DeRome has created a sense of vast distance by rendering the far background with a hazy quality while keeping the foreground in clear focus.
Signed "Albert DeRome" in the lower right corner.
Inscription on verso as a gift to the artist's mother.
Purchased from the estate of the artist Patterson's Antiques, Los Gatos.
Presented in a wood frame with a new white mat.
Image size: 5.75"H x 8"W
Frame size: 11"H x 14"W
Born in Cayucos, California, Albert De Rome (American, 1885-1959) became a California landscape painter, especially of natural landscapes formations, seascapes and marine scenes near Carmel and Monterey. Usually his palette was bright in both oil and watercolor, but he did the occasional nocturne. Scholars have compared his painting style and subjects to those of Thomas Hill and Albert Bierstadt. However, Albert De Rome never affiliated with any formal group of painters, although he had many close friends including Percy Gray, Gunnar Widforss and Will Sparks.
As a young man, Thomas De Rome worked at the Congress Spring Hotel in Saratoga, and in San Francisco at the Globe Foundry, owned by an uncle. He studied art under Arthur Mathews, John Stanton and Lorenzo Latimer...
