Edgar Woollatt was a successful landscape and figure painter, illustrator and designer. He was born in Radford, Nottingham on 8 February 1871, the son of William Woollatt, a Lace Designer. He studied at the Nottingham School of Art.
For many years Woollatt was a well-known watercolorist and at one time produced a considerable amount of commercial art for advertising and publishers. He became elected a full member of the Nottingham Society of Artists in 1908 and became its Vice President in 1929. He was also a member of the London Sketch Club.
Woollatt lived on Woodborough Road and had a studio on Newcastle Drive in The Park, Nottingham. He was a regular exhibitor in Nottingham and throughout the East Midlands. He had several works exhibited at the Royal Academy. One of these, entitled ‘Stirling Castle’ was purchased by the Nottingham Castle Art Gallery and forms part of its permanent collection.
Woollatt enjoyed playing tennis and golf and was a member of the local Reform Club. He died suddenly in his Studio in 1931 at the age of 60.

This charming original watercolor painting depicts the scene outside the building known as the Round House which used to stand on Clifton Lane in the Wilford district of Nottingham. The creamy stone walls of the building and its ornate windows give a glimpse of its quirky character. There is heavy foliage around the property and the house itself is perfectly framed between the branches of two large trees. In front of the Round House is a Romany gypsy traveller horse drawn caravan, perched on tall wooden wheels, and two figures, apparently engaged in conversation. There are half a dozen hens roaming freely on the grass verge. The painting is executed with a light, delicate touch and provides a reminder of life at the turn of the twentieth century. The palette suggests this is late summer.
The Round House was a picturesque little semi-circular castle, complete with battlements. It stood in the east bank of the river Trent, near to Fairham Brook. It was surrounded by apple trees, gooseberry bushes and raspberry canes. It served as a focal point for picnics and as a place for children to play. On summer evenings local people would buy a tea of eggs, bread, butter and fruit and eat it in the Round House grounds. The Round House was demolished in the 1960s.

Ronald Maddox was an accomplished and successful British artist, designer and illustrator.
He was born in Purley, Surrey and studied at St. Albans School of Art from 1945 to 1948. He then served with the Air Ministry Design Service, during which time he attended Regent Street Polytechnic in London from 1949-51, before completing his studies at the London College of Printing. His tutors included Henry Trevick, Raymond Sheppard, and Christopher Saunders.
From 1953 to 1962 Maddox worked as an art director for advertising agencies in London. He then worked as a freelance artist illustrator and graphic designer. Between 1972 and 1989 Maddox worked extensively for the Post Office and the Royal Mail, and the Isle of Man postal authority. He designed stamps, stamp book covers, first day presentation packs, posters and charts. His stamps typically feature British architecture, rural life and the countryside. He also produced posters for British Rail and painted pictures that were used as carriage panel prints, and illustrated several books.
Maddox’s talents were well recognised and respected in the professional art and design communities. He was elected a member of the Society of Industrial Artists & Designers in 1956 and of the Royal Institute in 1959, in 1989 becoming its president. He was a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers and a Fellow of the Society of Architectural Illustrators.
Maddox received many awards for his work as an artist and designer, including the Winsor & Newton /RI 150th Anniversary Award in 1981 and the Members’ Award in 1991. He was a Hunting Group Finalist several times and won the Design Council Award in 1973 and the Rowland Hilder Award for the Most Outstanding Landscape in 1990.
Maddox excelled at architectural work, reproducing the textures and patterns of buildings, but he is perhaps best known for his topographical art...

Powers-court Estate. Playing Golf
By Simon Kozhin
Located in Zofingen, AG
On our trip to Ireland, we stopped at the Power Court estate, which reminds me a bit of the architecture of St. Petersburg.I saw people playing golf near the park. The weather was cloudy and the environment was sinking in sfumato, I wanted to immerse the viewer in this environment. The transparency of the watercolor made it possible to realize my idea.
